DMP Drive Leads to 528 Arrests Across Dhaka

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 528 people and filed 53 cases during a 24-hour operation across the capital, according to a statement issued by the police on Thursday (8 October).

The arrests were made as part of the DMP’s regular enforcement activities in different parts of Dhaka. Police said the operation also resulted in the recovery of cannabis and yaba, along with a bus, nine mobile phones, cash, non-judicial stamps, adulterated medicines and cosmetics, and equipment allegedly used to manufacture such products.

The DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division said the arrests were carried out by several metropolitan police divisions as well as specialised units.

The Mirpur division recorded the highest number of arrests, with 102 people detained during the 24-hour period. Wari followed with 75 arrests, while 73 people were arrested in Tejgaon. Lalbagh accounted for 67 arrests and Uttara for 63.

The Motijheel division arrested 53 people, while 52 were detained in Gulshan. In Ramna, police arrested 33 people. The Detective Branch (DB) arrested nine people, while one person was taken into custody in an operation conducted by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.

The distribution of arrests shows that enforcement activity was carried out across several major policing areas of the capital rather than being concentrated in a single part of the city. The DMP, which oversees policing in Dhaka, routinely conducts such operations to address suspected criminal activity and maintain public order.

During the latest drive, officers recovered cannabis and yaba, two types of narcotics frequently targeted in drug enforcement operations. Police also seized one bus and nine mobile phones. Other recovered items included non-judicial stamps and cash, as well as adulterated medicines and cosmetics and machinery or other equipment reportedly used in their production.

However, the police statement did not provide details of the quantities of narcotics recovered, the locations of the individual seizures or the specific allegations against each person arrested. It also did not disclose how the seized bus or mobile phones were connected to the cases.

A total of 53 cases were filed in connection with the operation. Police said legal proceedings against those arrested were under way.

The latest figures provide an overview of the scale of the DMP’s enforcement activity over the 24-hour period, but further details about the cases are expected to emerge through the legal process. Police did not provide a separate breakdown of how many of the cases related to narcotics, counterfeit or adulterated products, or other alleged offences.
