A Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader in Kurigram’s Rajibpur has been served with a show-cause notice following an allegation that he attempted to steal cattle from a village cowshed.
Mofizul Haque, senior vice-president of the Mohanganj Union unit of Chhatra Dal, has been asked to explain the allegation of violating party discipline. Alongside the notice, the Rajibpur Upazila Chhatra Dal has formed a four-member committee to investigate the incident and determine whether the allegations have any basis.
The decisions were announced on Wednesday (7 October) through separate letters signed by Rajibpur Upazila Chhatra Dal convener Mokhlesur Rahman and member secretary Nazmul Mahmud.
Under the show-cause notice, Mofizul has been given 48 hours to submit a written explanation. He has been instructed to provide his response at the Rajibpur Upazila BNP office in the presence of the upazila Chhatra Dal convener and member secretary.
The investigation committee is headed by Shamim Ahmed, joint convener of the upazila Chhatra Dal. The committee will examine the allegations and gather information about the circumstances surrounding the incident before the organisation decides whether any disciplinary action is warranted.
According to local sources and the written complaint, the incident allegedly occurred at around 2am on Sunday (4 October) in Votangpara village of Mohanganj Union. Mofizul and several other people allegedly entered the cowshed belonging to local resident Omar Ali.
Omar Ali reportedly noticed the intrusion and came outside. He allegedly caught Mofizul at the scene, but Mofizul subsequently managed to escape. The following morning, Omar Ali was allegedly subjected to verbal abuse and threats at a local market.
Dulal Hossain, Omar Ali’s 38-year-old son, later submitted a written complaint to Dushmara Police Station against Mofizul and three others in connection with the incident.
The complaint makes further allegations against Mofizul, including alleged involvement with drugs and online gambling. It claims that the attempted cattle theft was intended to raise money for those activities. The complainant also alleged that his father was assaulted and later threatened with murder after intervening to prevent the alleged theft.
The allegations have not been independently verified. Mofizul Haque’s response to the accusations could not be obtained. The investigation committee is therefore expected to assess the claims before the student organisation takes any further organisational decision.
For the local Chhatra Dal leadership, the matter is also being treated as a question of organisational discipline because Mofizul holds a senior position in the Mohanganj Union unit. The show-cause process gives him an opportunity to respond to the allegations before any disciplinary action is considered.
District Chhatra Dal general secretary Sohel Rana said the notice had been issued because a specific allegation had been made against the leader.
“Since there is a specific allegation, the Chhatra Dal leader has been served with a show-cause notice. Action will be taken based on his response,” he said.
