A longstanding marital dispute over alleged infidelity culminated in tragedy during the early hours of Thursday in Singair, Manikganj, after a man was fatally stabbed by his wife at their family residence.
The deceased has been identified as Rashedul Islam, a resident of South Dhalla village under the Dhalla Union of Singair Upazila, and son of the late Surman Ali. Police officials confirmed that the incident took place at approximately 5:00 am inside the couple’s home. The accused, 36-year-old Hasna Begum, fled the scene immediately following the attack and remains at large.
A Tragic End to a Long Marriage
Local sources and law enforcement authorities revealed that Rashedul and Hasna had been married for nearly eighteen years and shared two children. However, their domestic life had grown increasingly strained over recent months, driven primarily by Hasna’s deep-seated suspicions regarding her husband’s involvement in an extramarital affair.
The simmering tension boiled over early on Thursday morning when a heated argument erupted between the couple inside their bedroom. As the confrontation escalated, Hasna reportedly brandished a sharp kitchen knife and plunged it into Rashedul’s abdomen, inflicting catastrophic internal injuries.
Hearing the commotion and Rashedul’s cries for help, family members and neighbours rushed to the room, where they discovered him bleeding profusely. In a desperate bid to save his life, relatives lifted the severely injured man into a battery-run auto-rickshaw to transport him to the nearest healthcare facility. Regrettably, his injuries proved fatal, and Rashedul succumbed to massive blood loss before reaching the hospital.
Police Investigation Underway
Following the assault, Hasna abandoned her mobile telephone at the crime scene and absconded before neighbours or law enforcement could intervene.
Officers from the local police station swiftly attended the scene to gather evidence and complete initial inquest reports. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Singair Police Station, Md. Mazharul Islam, confirmed that the body has been sent to the morgue at Manikganj Medical College Hospital for a comprehensive post-mortem examination.
“We arrived at the site shortly after being notified of the tragedy,” stated OC Mazharul Islam. “The suspect left her mobile phone behind at the scene before fleeing. Multiple police teams are currently conducting raids to trace her whereabouts and bring her into custody. Formal legal proceedings are underway, and a murder case is being filed.”
Investigators are currently collecting forensic evidence, interviewing surrounding residents, and working to recover the weapon utilised in the fatal attack to reconstruct the precise sequence of events.
Escalating Domestic Violence Trends
This fatal encounter in Manikganj highlights a disturbing and persistent trend of severe domestic conflicts escalating into violent crime across the country. According to reports compiled by national human rights organisations and legal aid societies, domestic disputes—frequently stemming from marital discord, financial instability, or suspicions of infidelity—account for a significant proportion of violent crimes in rural and semi-urban communities.
Legal experts and socio-economic analysts point out that while disputes over infidelity are common triggers, the lack of timely community counselling, effective dispute resolution mechanisms, and immediate crisis intervention often allows verbal altercations to deteriorate into fatal violence. Police authorities have urged community leaders and family units to seek administrative or legal mediation when domestic conflicts reach an impasse, rather than allowing personal grievances to culminate in lawlessness and loss of life.
