Donald Trump Insists He Deserves Nobel Peace Prize Before Announcement

United States President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his belief that he should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, whilst conceding doubts about whether the decision-makers in Oslo will ultimately grant him the honour. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office at the White House on Wednesday, the US leader openly questioned the tendencies of the Norwegian Nobel Committee ahead of its official announcement scheduled for Friday.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is set to reveal the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize tomorrow. Reflecting on the committee’s track record, Trump voiced skepticism regarding his chances, observing that the panel carries a reputation for overlooking figures like him.
Since returning to the White House for his second presidential term last year, Trump has repeatedly asserted that his geopolitical achievements warrant the world’s most prestigious accolade. In his view, the timing for such recognition is long overdue. Addressing his past connection to the prize, he recalled feeling deeply honored when the previous laureate indirectly credited him, stating publicly that no leader in history was more deserving of the distinction than President Trump himself.
That gesture stems from January, when Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado presented Trump with her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal. Machado, seeking stronger diplomatic backing from Washington in her campaign against the ruling regime in Caracas, handed over the physical award as a symbol of appreciation.
Trump bases his candidature on claims that his administration has successfully halted eight major wars and international conflicts since taking office in January last year. Foreign leaders from Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have previously advocated for his nomination, praising his intervention in regional disputes, though independent verification of these diplomatic breakthroughs remains contentious.
Critiques of Trump’s foreign policy record persist across several fronts. Multiple stakeholders involved in the regions he claims to have pacified dispute Washington’s narrative, pointing out that several areas—including the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the volatile Thailand-Cambodia border—have witnessed renewed flare-ups in violence. Furthermore, the pledge to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict on his first day back in office remains unfulfilled as hostilities endure.
Simultaneously, a seven-month conflict triggered by joint US-Israeli military strikes against Iran has disrupted global energy supply chains. The resulting surge in fuel prices worldwide has exerted significant economic pressure on American households ahead of the upcoming US mid-term elections in November.
Observers note that other prominent figures and institutions are widely regarded as strong contenders for this year’s prize. Leading candidates reported by international commentators include Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court (ICC), and the United Nations Special Rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories.
