German Tourist Returns to Dhaka Empty-Handed After Railway Theft

An 18-year-old German tourist, Krill Lander, has returned to Dhaka empty-handed after his stolen belongings, including a MacBook and a DSLR camera, could not be retrieved following an intensive multi-agency search across Rajshahi Division.
The young traveler departed from Rajshahi railway station aboard the Dhaka-bound Padma Express at approximately 4:00 pm on Thursday (8 October). His departure came after hours of coordinated tracking operations involving the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, Detective Branch, Special Response Battalion, Tourist Police, and Railway Police. Despite extensive efforts, law enforcement agencies had failed to recover the stolen property as of 9:00 pm on Thursday night.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon (7 October) at Natore railway station. Lander, who was visiting Bangladesh for the first time, had been touring various tourist attractions in Bogura before boarding the Banglabandha Express from Santahar to Natore. Upon arriving in Natore during the late afternoon, he planned to secure a connecting train ticket toward Darshana station to cross the border into India.
While stepping away to withdraw cash from a nearby automated teller machine (ATM) inside the station, Lander entrusted his luggage to a man who falsely claimed to be a railway official. Returning moments later, the tourist found both the imposter and his baggage missing. The stolen bag contained his MacBook laptop and DSLR camera. Fortunately, his passport and mobile phone remained in his personal possession.
After reporting the theft to the Natore Sadar Police Station, digital tracking revealed the MacBook’s location in Rajshahi. Lander arrived in the city around 11:00 pm on Wednesday, where local railway police provided him with lodging and food at a station hotel.
Hafizur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of the Rajshahi Railway Police Station, explained that the laptop’s signal was initially pinpointed near the Railgate area and later near the local Women’s College. Joint teams immediately raided the surrounding neighbourhoods; however, because the laptop lacked an active SIM card, authorities could only obtain approximate Wi-Fi or GPS coordinates rather than a pinpoint address.
By 7:40 am on Thursday, tracking data showed the device moving near Abdulpur railway station. Officers promptly searched the Titumir Express and Bonalata Express passenger trains, but turned up no trace of the stolen items.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday afternoon, Lander expressed deep concern regarding the lost data and personal files stored on his laptop. Despite the distressing ordeal, he commended the police for their prompt hospitality and ongoing assistance, remaining hopeful that his gear might eventually be recovered. Railway authorities affirmed that search operations remain active, treating the international visitor as an honoured guest of the nation.
