Police have launched an investigation after unidentified gunmen riding motorcycles opened fire in the Avenue-5 area of Pallabi in Mirpur, Dhaka, late at night, sparking panic among local residents.
No casualties or injuries were reported following the shooting. According to eyewitnesses and preliminary police findings, several armed individuals arrived at the scene on two motorcycles late in the evening. The suspects were reportedly searching for a specific individual in the neighbourhood. Failing to locate the person, the assailants fired multiple shots into the air before fleeing the scene at high speed.
Unconfirmed reports from local sources indicate that at least four rounds of gunshots were discharged in quick succession during the incident. The sudden sound of gunfire shattered the late-night quiet of the residential area, sending frightened residents indoors and creating a tense atmosphere across the locality.
Police teams from Pallabi Police Station responded swiftly to the scene upon receiving reports of the shooting. Officers secured the surrounding perimeter, conducted preliminary inquiries, and interviewed local residents to piece together the sequence of events.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pallabi Police Station, Jalal Uddin, stated that initial reports suggest a group of men arrived on two motorcycles looking for a specific resident before opening fire. He added that officers are working to determine the precise number of rounds fired and the underlying motive behind the reckless shooting.
Law enforcement authorities are currently analyzing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage collected from surrounding buildings and commercial establishments to trace the movement of the motorcycles and identify the gunmen involved. OC Jalal Uddin assured that targeted drives and police patrols have been intensified in and around Mirpur Avenue-5 to apprehend the suspects and maintain public order in the capital.
