Bangladesh Back Spin-Heavy Attack After Winning Toss Against Afghanistan

Bangladesh have won the toss against Afghanistan and elected to bowl first in their Test match, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expecting the dry pitch and hot weather to make batting more challenging as the contest progresses.

Shanto said the decision was based on his assessment of the surface, which he believes could become slower and offer greater assistance to spin bowlers over the next few days. Afghanistan, meanwhile, are being led by Rahmat Shah, who is captaining the side in Test cricket for the first time.

Explaining his decision at the toss, Shanto said the conditions could favour the team bowling first, particularly if the pitch deteriorates as the match unfolds.

“The wicket looks quite dry. The weather here is quite hot. I think batting in the second innings will be a little difficult for the batters,” he said.

The Bangladesh captain expects the surface to offer more turn on the second and third days. A slower pitch could test the batters’ footwork, shot selection and ability to judge deliveries, especially against quality spinners. Bangladesh will therefore be looking to take advantage of the conditions early and prevent Afghanistan from building substantial partnerships.

However, a dry pitch does not automatically guarantee success for the bowling side. Bangladesh’s bowlers will need to maintain accurate lines and lengths, apply sustained pressure and make the most of any opportunities created. Afghanistan’s ability to negotiate the opening spells and establish a solid first-innings total could prove crucial.

Shanto also expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s recent performances in Test cricket, while stressing the need for greater consistency. He described the fixture as another opportunity for the team to demonstrate its capabilities and said the players had prepared well in the days leading up to the match.

“We have been playing some good cricket, but as a team we need to be consistent enough. This is another opportunity to show our skills. I hope the boys have prepared well over the last few days. We will play good cricket here,” he said.

Afghanistan’s spin attack is another major consideration for Bangladesh. The opposition have several capable spinners, and Shanto acknowledged that his batters would face a demanding challenge if the pitch begins to turn as anticipated.

He said Bangladesh had maintained the same approach to preparation that they followed at home, adding that the team were satisfied with their preparations and confident in their own spin resources.

“They are a very good team, as we all know, and they have some quality spinners. We have practised here in the same way we do back home. We also have some quality spinners. We are quite happy with our preparation and hope to play good cricket,” Shanto said.

Bangladesh have opted for a bowling combination of three spinners and two pace bowlers. The selection reflects the importance the team have attached to the conditions, while retaining different options for various stages of the innings.

The pace bowlers will be expected to make an impact with the new ball and create early pressure, while the spinners could become increasingly influential if the surface slows down and provides more turn. Their effectiveness, however, will depend on their control, variation and ability to build pressure over successive overs.

For Afghanistan, the immediate challenge will be to counter Bangladesh’s bowling attack and make the most of their first-innings opportunity. Strong partnerships could help them establish a competitive position, while losing wickets in clusters would leave the side vulnerable to sustained pressure.

The match also marks an important occasion for Rahmat Shah, who is taking charge of Afghanistan in Test cricket for the first time. Leadership decisions, including the management of the batting order and the use of bowling resources, could become increasingly significant as conditions change.

Test cricket often rewards patience and adaptability. Batters must be prepared to leave difficult deliveries, select their attacking shots carefully and adjust their approach as the pitch evolves. Bowlers, meanwhile, need to remain disciplined even when conditions do not immediately produce wickets.

For Bangladesh, winning the toss has provided an opportunity to pursue a strategy tailored to the conditions. The next step is to turn that decision into an advantage through disciplined bowling and sharp fielding. Whether the dry surface develops as Shanto anticipates will become clearer as the match progresses, but the opening innings could play a significant role in shaping the contest.
