Two women from the same family were killed after being struck by a passenger bus in Bakshiganj, Jamalpur, in northern Bangladesh, on Saturday morning.
The accident occurred at around 6am on 10 October in the Thakurpara area of Nilakhia, along the Dhaka–Bakshiganj highway. The victims were identified as Ufeja Begum, 65, and her daughter-in-law, Farida Begum, 35. Both were residents of the same village.
According to local sources, a Shanti Paribahan passenger bus travelling from Dhaka to Roumari in Kurigram district was passing through the Nilakhia Thakurpara area of Bakshiganj Upazila when the collision occurred.
Ufeja and Farida were standing beside the road at the time. The bus struck the two women, killing them at the scene, local sources said.
News of the incident prompted grief among residents of the area. The deaths of two members of the same family in a single accident have left their relatives and neighbours mourning their loss.
Following reports of the collision, police from Bakshiganj Police Station arrived at the scene. They seized the bus allegedly involved in the accident and detained its helper, identified as Mohiuddin.
Bakshiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mokbul Hossain confirmed the seizure and detention. He said the bus had been taken into police custody and that legal proceedings relating to the incident were under way.
The precise circumstances that led to the collision have not yet been established. The available information does not clarify why the bus struck the women or whether any specific factors contributed to the accident. Further investigation will be needed to establish the sequence of events and determine responsibility.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers faced by pedestrians along busy roads. People standing close to moving traffic can be particularly vulnerable, especially on highways that pass through residential areas. Safe driving practices, appropriate speeds and greater awareness of roadside activity are essential to reducing the risk of serious collisions.
However, the specific cause of this accident remains unconfirmed, and no conclusion about responsibility can be drawn from the information currently available.
Police have confirmed that the bus has been seized and its helper detained as the legal process continues. Further details about the investigation are awaited.
