Ronaldo Hits 980 Career Goals on Al Nassr Return

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his return to club football with a goal for Al Nassr, reaching 980 career goals as his side defeated Al Diriyah 3–0 on Friday. The 41-year-old Portuguese forward made an immediate impact after leaving Portugal’s national team camp a week earlier, putting recent controversy behind him with a strong performance on the pitch.

Ronaldo’s return attracted considerable attention following reports of a disagreement involving Portugal’s national team arrangements and his relationship with coach Jorge Jesus. While the situation prompted discussion in Portugal, Al Nassr supporters made their backing for the veteran forward clear when he returned to action in the Saudi Pro League.

The controversy began on 27 September, when Portugal defeated Norway 2–1 in a UEFA Nations League fixture. Ronaldo remained on the substitutes’ bench throughout the match and was not brought on. He subsequently left the national team camp.

Ronaldo later claimed that Jesus had failed to honour a promise made to him. The two had worked together at Al Nassr during the previous season, making the reported disagreement a talking point among supporters and football observers.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his international future, Ronaldo received a warm welcome from Al Nassr fans before Friday’s match. Supporters displayed a large banner bearing the message, ‘Greatness is earned’, alongside his iconic number seven. In the seventh minute, the crowd chanted his name, demonstrating their continued admiration for the Portuguese star.

Ronaldo responded to the reception by opening the scoring in the 23rd minute. Former Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman advanced before taking a shot that Al Diriyah goalkeeper Walid Ali failed to hold. Ronaldo reacted quickly to the rebound and sent the ball into the net.

The goal took Ronaldo’s career tally to 980, adding another milestone to a remarkable playing career spanning club and international football.

Al Nassr continued to control the match after taking the lead. Samu Costa doubled the advantage in the 35th minute, giving the home side a comfortable position before half-time. Coman then found the net himself in the 77th minute, completing the 3–0 victory and securing all three points for his team.

The result left Al Nassr level on points with Al Qadsiah at the top of the Saudi Pro League standings. However, Al Nassr remained behind their rivals on goal difference. With several other teams still scheduled to play over the weekend, the league table could change further.

After the final whistle, Ronaldo shared a photograph of his goal celebration on social media. He accompanied the image with a brief message: ‘Job done. Next game!’

The post suggested that the forward was already looking ahead to his next challenge, despite the attention surrounding his recent departure from Portugal’s camp.

Ronaldo’s international record remains equally impressive. He has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, making him the leading goalscorer in men’s international football. Earlier in the week, he issued a statement confirming that he remained available for national team duty.

However, it remains unclear whether his departure from the national team camp will lead to disciplinary action. The issue could continue to attract attention as Portugal considers its preparations for upcoming international fixtures.

For Al Nassr, Ronaldo’s return provided a timely boost as the club continues its pursuit of success in the Saudi Pro League. His goal, the team’s commanding victory and the supporters’ enthusiastic reception offered a reminder of his continuing influence.

At 41, Ronaldo remains a central figure for both club and country. Although questions remain over his international situation, his latest performance showed that he is still focused on scoring goals and helping Al Nassr maintain its challenge at the top of the league.
