Tragedy in Jamalpur as Bus Mows Down Mother and Daughter-in-Law

A quiet Saturday morning ended in devastating tragedy in northern Bangladesh after a passenger bus ran over two women standing by the roadside, killing them instantly. The lethal accident occurred at approximately 6:00 am on 10 October in the Nilakhia Thakurpara area of Bakshiganj Upazila, situated within the Jamalpur district.

The deceased have been identified as 65-year-old Ufeja Begum and her 35-year-old daughter-in-law, Farida Begum, both residents of the local Nilakhia Thakurpara village.

According to local eyewitnesses and police reports, the vehicle involved was an inter-district passenger bus operated by Shanti Paribahan. The bus was travelling along the Dhaka–Bakshiganj regional highway, heading towards Roumari Upazila in Kurigram district after departing from the capital. As the vehicle navigated through Nilakhia Thakurpara, the driver reportedly lost control or failed to spot the two women, striking them violently whilst they were standing beside the road. The sheer force of the impact caused immediate fatality at the scene.

Upon receiving immediate reports from distressed bystanders, a team from the Bakshiganj Police Station rushed to the location to secure the area and recover the bodies. Police promptly seized the offending Shanti Paribahan bus and took the vehicle’s helper, identified as Mohiuddin, into custody.

Makbul Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bakshiganj Police Station, confirmed the incident and the subsequent police response. He stated that the bus had been impounded and the helper detained for further interrogation, adding that formal legal procedures regarding the fatal collision were currently underway.

Road traffic accidents remain a persistent public safety concern across Bangladesh, particularly on district highways where speeding, driver fatigue on long-haul routes, and inadequate pedestrian safety infrastructure frequently contribute to fatal collisions. The stretch connecting Dhaka to the northern border areas often sees heavy inter-city traffic in the early morning hours, creating hazardous conditions for local villagers residing adjacent to the primary thoroughfares.
