Dhaka Police Arrest 452 in 24-Hour Crackdown, Mirpur Leads

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 452 people during a series of operations across the capital over a 24-hour period, with Mirpur recording the highest number of arrests. Police also filed 32 cases during the same period as part of their efforts to tackle crime and recover suspected illegal items and narcotics.

The figures were confirmed on Sunday, 11 October, by Mohammad Akter Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division.

According to the police, the operations covered several areas of Dhaka and resulted in arrests across the metropolitan police divisions. Mirpur accounted for the largest share, with 114 people arrested. Wari followed with 66 arrests, while 60 people were detained in Tejgaon and 55 in Motijheel.

Police arrested 53 people in Lalbagh, 35 in Gulshan, 33 in Uttara and 25 in Ramna. The Detective Branch (DB) arrested a further 11 people.

The distribution of arrests reflects the scale of the operations across the capital, although the DMP did not provide a breakdown of the specific allegations against those detained in each division.

Narcotics and Other Items Recovered

During the operations, officers recovered 5,931 yaba tablets, 90 grams of cannabis and 144 bottles of locally produced liquor. The seizures formed part of the broader effort to identify suspected drug-related activities and gather evidence for investigations.

Police also recovered an unexploded cocktail bomb and a portion of another unexploded cocktail bomb. No further details were provided about where the explosive devices were found or whether they were connected to any particular incident.

Other items recovered during the operations included a covered van, a motorcycle, a compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered auto-rickshaw, two lighters, two pairs of scissors, six mobile phones, a machete and a travel bag.

The DMP also reported rescuing one victim during the operations. However, the police statement did not disclose the individual’s identity, the circumstances surrounding the rescue or whether the case involved any suspected criminal activity.

Legal Proceedings Under Way

The operations were conducted in different police station areas across Dhaka, with officers making arrests and recovering suspected contraband and other items for further investigation.

The 32 cases filed during the 24-hour period indicate that the operations also resulted in formal legal proceedings. However, the DMP did not provide a detailed breakdown of the cases or specify which alleged offences they concerned.

Police said legal proceedings against the arrested individuals were under way. Further details about the allegations, the evidential status of the recovered items and the progress of the investigations were not immediately available.

The arrests and seizures form part of the DMP’s ongoing law enforcement activities in the capital. The outcome of the cases will depend on the evidence gathered and the subsequent legal process. Arrest alone does not establish guilt, and the allegations against those detained will need to be assessed through the appropriate judicial procedures.
