A 31-year-old man was arrested with a functional Pakistani revolver and eight rounds of ammunition during a raid in Pangsha upazila of Rajbari district on Sunday morning.
The operation was conducted by the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) at the man’s residence in Harinadangga village, where officials recovered the firearm and ammunition concealed inside a shopping bag.
The arrested man was identified as Arafat Hossain, also known as ‘Kala Manik’. He is the son of the late Nawab Ali and a resident of Harinadangga village.
Mohammad Russell Ali, an inspector at the DNC’s Rajbari district office, said the authorities conducted the raid based on confidential information.
During a search of Arafat’s home, officials discovered a Pakistani revolver with a wooden grip hidden inside a shopping bag. Eight rounds of ammunition were also recovered.
According to the DNC official, the revolver was functional when it was recovered. However, the authorities have not disclosed where the weapon originated, how it came into Arafat’s possession or whether it had previously been used in any criminal activity.
Following the operation, Arafat was arrested. A case has been filed with Pangsha Model Police Station in connection with the incident, Russell Ali said. The accused was subsequently sent to court.
Questions Remain Over the Weapon’s Origin
The recovery of a firearm and ammunition from inside a residence has raised questions about the weapon’s ownership and source. Investigators may need to establish whether the revolver was legally acquired, whether it had a valid licence and whether anyone else was involved in the incident.
However, the authorities have not provided further details about the progress of the investigation. No information has been released confirming that the recovered firearm was used in any criminal offence.
The illegal possession and use of firearms can pose a serious threat to public safety. In cases involving the recovery of weapons, identifying their origin, examining the recovered evidence and determining the roles of any individuals involved are important aspects of the investigation.
Further proceedings in the case will depend on the evidence gathered and the applicable legal procedures.
The allegations against Arafat Hossain will be determined through the judicial process. His arrest does not, by itself, establish his guilt.
