Sylhet Sanitation Worker Fatally Stabbed After Objecting to Wife’s Photography

A conservancy worker employed by the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) was fatally stabbed in Sylhet after confronting a youth who was taking photographs of his wife without her consent. The brutal attack occurred on Sunday evening at approximately 8:00 pm in the Kastaghar area, adjacent to the local Sweeper Colony.
The victim, identified as 35-year-old Hridoy Kumar Harijan, worked as a sanitation worker for the city corporation and was the sole breadwinner for his family, leaving behind his wife and four young children—two sons and two daughters. Following the completion of an autopsy on Monday afternoon, his final rites were performed amidst overwhelming grief and anger among family members, colleagues, and local residents.
Eyewitnesses and relatives stated that the conflict began when a local youth named Amin was caught surreptitiously taking photographs of Hridoy’s wife, Pinky Rani, on his mobile phone in the Kastaghar area. When Hridoy noticed and objected, a heated verbal exchange broke out between the two men, which quickly escalated into a physical scuffle.
Although Amin initially left the spot following the altercation, he promptly summoned several gang members armed with sharp domestic weapons via mobile phone. The armed group arrived shortly after and launched an unprovoked assault on Hridoy, stabbing him repeatedly. He collapsed to the ground suffering from severe blood loss and succumbed to his injuries before medical intervention could be rendered.
Hridoy’s younger brother, Ajoy Kumar Harijan, expressed immense sorrow over the tragic loss, questioning how his brother’s four young children would manage without their father. He demanded swift justice and capital punishment for those responsible for the fatal attack.
Investigating authorities have stepped up efforts to apprehend those involved. Officer-in-Charge of Sylhet Kotwali Police Station, Khan Mohammad Mainul Zakir, confirmed that multiple specialized police units utilizing modern tracking technologies have launched drives to arrest Amin and his accomplices.
Police have also retrieved a video clip related to the incident, which is currently undergoing detailed forensic analysis. Investigators noted subtle discrepancies between the visual evidence in the video and the initial statements provided in the family’s complaint. Police officials assured that an impartial, thorough investigation is underway to uncover the exact sequence of events before formal charges are pressed.
