A man accused of involvement in the murder of a young man at a brick kiln office in Rupsha, Khulna, has been arrested in Chattogram. Abdur Rahman, 30, was detained as one of the key accused in the killing of Fakhrul Islam, 32, according to the Special Response Battalion (SRB).
The arrest was made during a joint operation by SRB-6 Khulna and SRB-7 Chattogram in the Hathazari area at around 1.30am on Tuesday, following Monday night, 12 October, the agency said.
Abdur Rahman is the son of Abdur Rouf Sheikh and a resident of Ilaipur village in Rupsha upazila, Khulna. Following his arrest, he was handed over to Hathazari Police Station, according to SRB-6.
According to the first information report (FIR), the incident took place on the night of 12 August at the office of Messrs Rupsha Bricks in Rupsha upazila. Fakhrul Islam was at the office when a group of assailants entered and opened fire at him indiscriminately before fleeing the scene.
Fakhrul sustained gunshot wounds in the attack. Local residents rescued him and took him to Rupsha Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared him dead.
Following the killing, Fakhrul’s brother, Farhad Hossain, filed a murder case with Rupsha Police Station, initially naming unidentified individuals as the accused. The authorities have since been working to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
SRB-6’s media cell confirmed that Abdur Rahman had been arrested as one of the key accused in the case. However, the agency did not provide further details about his alleged role in the killing, the motive behind the attack or his links with other suspects.
The battalion said it continued to conduct operations to arrest suspects in criminal cases, convicted offenders and individuals wanted under arrest warrants. Its activities also target armed criminals, drug traffickers and people suspected of involvement in serious offences, including murder and rape.
SRB-6 added that operations were continuing to apprehend the remaining suspects in Fakhrul Islam’s murder case. Further investigation is expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and determine the alleged involvement of others.
The arrest marks a further development in the investigation, although details of the suspect’s alleged involvement and the identities of the other accused have yet to be disclosed by the agency.
