Seven More Children Succumb to Measles Symptoms in Bangladesh

Seven more children have died after exhibiting symptoms of measles across Bangladesh over a 24-hour period, bringing the total number of deaths associated with the outbreak to 1,177 since mid-March.

During the same reporting period, hospitals across the nation admitted 1,327 patients with suspected or confirmed measles infections, reflecting ongoing pressure on pediatric health facilities. The figures were officially released on Wednesday, 14 October by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in its regular epidemiological update on measles monitoring.

According to the DGHS report, the regional breakdown of the latest seven fatalities indicates that Dhaka division recorded the highest toll with five children dying from measles-like symptoms, while Mymensingh and Barishal divisions each recorded one death.

Health department data reveals that since the monitoring drive commenced on 15 March, the aggregate mortality figure from both lab-confirmed measles cases and suspected symptomatic cases has reached 1,177 nationwide. Of these total deaths, 104 individuals succumbed to laboratory-confirmed measles, whereas 1,073 patients died presenting clinical symptoms characteristic of the viral infection.

Over the last 24 hours alone, health authorities identified 1,199 patients exhibiting measles symptoms, taking the nationwide total of suspected clinical infections to 208,570. Additionally, diagnostic testing confirmed 128 new cases within the same timeframe, raising the total number of laboratory-confirmed measles cases in the country to 22,840.

Public hospital statistics further indicate that a total of 185,390 patients with suspected measles infections have been admitted to medical facilities across Bangladesh since 15 March. Out of these admitted individuals, 177,698 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged from hospital care following treatment.

The persistence of measles transmissions underscores the critical necessity of maintaining robust childhood immunization drives across urban and rural health networks. Public health officials continue to monitor regional infection trajectories, emphasizing early medical intervention for fever and characteristic skin rashes to prevent severe complications among vulnerable young children.
