Police in Noakhali Sadar Upazila have arrested four individuals in connection with the brutal lynching of a physically and mentally disabled man who was falsely accused of theft, tied to a tree, and beaten to death before his body was abandoned miles away.
The details of the gruesome attack were disclosed during a press conference held at Sudharam Police Station on Wednesday, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Taher Mohammad Arif Hossain.
The victim, identified as 35-year-old Kabir Hossain, resided with his mother, Kamala Begum, in Gain Bari within the Noannai Union. According to police records and local testimony, the tragic sequence of events unfolded on Tuesday afternoon at Islamganj Market. A mob led by key suspect Alauddin Munshi confronted Kabir as he was walking home, unlawfully detaining him under the pretext of theft.Assaulted relentlessly by a gathering crowd of 25 to 30 men using wooden sticks, fists, and kicks, Kabir sustained fatal injuries while bound to a tree with nylon ropes. Rather than seeking medical assistance for the dying man, the perpetrators loaded his critical body into a battery-operated auto-rickshaw and transported him roughly five kilometres to Devipur village in the neighbouring Neyazpur Union, where they abandoned him near the eastern edge of the district town.
Alerted by local residents, officers from Sudharam Police Station retrieved Kabir and rushed him to Noakhali General Hospital, where attending physicians formally declared him dead upon arrival. Police subsequently completed an inquest report before sending the body for a post-mortem examination.
The victim’s mother, Kamala Begum, filed a murder case at Sudharam Police Station naming eight primary suspects alongside 25 to 30 unidentified co-conspirators. In an emotional account, she described her son as an innocent man whose physical and cognitive impairments left him vulnerable. She recounted that he routinely wandered during the day before returning home every evening, maintaining that his violent death was entirely unprovoked.
Following the registration of the case, a joint operation conducted late Tuesday night by Sudharam Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) resulted in the swift arrest of four key suspects:
-
Md Alauddin Munshi (28) — Identified as the main ringleader of the attack.
-
Md Farooq Uddin Shuvo (24)
-
Md Hossain (34)
-
Md Tarek (23)
Law enforcement authorities also seized the auto-rickshaw used to transport the victim. Operations remain ongoing to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the incident.
Mob vigilantism and extrajudicial violence remain significant law enforcement challenges across suburban and rural parts of Bangladesh. Victims in such incidents are frequently targeted on unverified rumors of theft or robbery, leaving vulnerable individuals—particularly those living with mental or physical disabilities—disproportionately exposed to sudden mob violence. Senior police officials stressed that strict legal measures will be enforced against all individuals who take the law into their own hands.
