Vinícius Handed Four-Match Ban, Ruled Out of El Clásico

Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior has been handed a four-match suspension following his dismissal against Villarreal, ruling him out of several important La Liga fixtures, including the eagerly anticipated El Clásico against Barcelona.

The Brazilian winger was sent off after pulling the hair of Villarreal defender Nathaniel Saliba. His reaction to the referee’s decision also contributed to the length of the suspension, with the disciplinary committee imposing an additional two-match ban for his conduct following the red card.

According to the disciplinary ruling, Vinícius has been suspended for two matches for pulling his opponent’s hair when the ball was not being contested. A further two-match suspension was imposed because of what the committee described as an aggressive attitude after his dismissal.

As a result, Vinícius will miss La Liga matches against Sevilla, Barcelona, Racing Santander and Valencia. He is expected to return against Celta Vigo in the 13th round of the league, with the fixture scheduled to take place between 20 and 23 November. His absence means Real Madrid will be without one of their key attacking players for more than a month of domestic league action.

Controversial Incident Against Villarreal

The incident occurred in the 70th minute of Real Madrid’s match against Villarreal on Saturday night. Vinícius pulled Saliba’s hair during the build-up to a counter-attack that ended with a goal.

The incident initially went unnoticed, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened. After reviewing the replays several times, referee Díaz de Mera Escuderos showed Vinícius a straight red card. The goal was subsequently disallowed.

The referee’s report became a crucial piece of evidence in the disciplinary proceedings. It explicitly stated that the ball was not being contested when Vinícius pulled his opponent’s hair. That distinction proved significant in determining the punishment.

Football disciplinary rules distinguish between offences committed while challenging for the ball and incidents involving conduct unrelated to the contest for possession. In Vinícius’s case, the committee treated the incident as an offence away from the ball, resulting in a two-match suspension for the initial misconduct.

His behaviour after receiving the red card also came under scrutiny. The report described his attitude as aggressive and stated that teammates had to restrain him. The committee used this assessment as the basis for imposing the additional two-match ban.

Reports also indicated that Vinícius confronted a La Liga match official and used insulting language towards the league during the heated exchange. His reaction further intensified the controversy surrounding the dismissal.

Real Madrid Unhappy With the Punishment

Real Madrid regard the four-match suspension as excessively harsh and believe the punishment is disproportionate to the offence. The club has also expressed dissatisfaction with the broader approach taken by the refereeing authorities and disciplinary committee.

The Spanish giants had been preparing for the possibility of a lengthy suspension for several days. However, they had hoped the penalty would be limited to fewer than three matches. A two-match ban would have been considered a favourable outcome, while four matches exceeded their expectations.

The club had also hoped the committee would take a more lenient view of Vinícius’s reaction to the red card. Real Madrid reportedly believed there was room to argue for a reduction, particularly because the referee’s report did not explicitly record the alleged abusive language.

However, the disciplinary committee ultimately declined to reduce the punishment. The referee’s account of the incident and the available video footage left the club with limited grounds for challenging the decision successfully.

The outcome represents a setback for both the player and the club, particularly given the timing of the suspension.

El Clásico Absence a Major Blow for Madrid

Vinícius’s absence against Barcelona is likely to be the most significant consequence of the ban. The Brazilian has become an important component of Real Madrid’s attacking system, using his pace, dribbling ability and movement to create chances and unsettle opposition defences.

Without him, Madrid will have to adjust their attacking plans for one of the biggest fixtures of the season. His absence against Sevilla, Racing Santander and Valencia will also limit the manager’s options during a demanding stretch of the domestic campaign.

The suspension applies to La Liga fixtures, meaning Vinícius remains available for Real Madrid’s Champions League commitments, subject to the competition’s separate disciplinary rules. He is scheduled to feature in a European fixture in Rome, although his immediate domestic return will have to wait until the match against Celta Vigo after the international break.

For Real Madrid, the challenge now is to manage the winger’s absence without losing momentum in the league. For Vinícius, the episode serves as a costly reminder of how an incident on the pitch and the reaction that follows can have consequences extending well beyond a single match.

With El Clásico among the fixtures he will miss, the suspension has dealt a significant blow to Madrid’s plans for one of the most closely watched matches of the season.
