Union Parishad Member Arrested with 198 Yaba Pills in Dinajpur

A Union Parishad member has been arrested with 198 yaba pills in Ghoraghat upazila of Dinajpur, with police claiming the drugs were concealed in a plastic bag tucked into the folds of his lungi.

The accused, Zakirul Islam, 39, was detained at around 9pm on Thursday, 15 October, in front of a tea stall at Kulanandapur Bazar in Bulakipur Union. He was subsequently shown arrested in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.

Zakirul is a member of Ward No. 5 of Bulakipur Union Parishad and a resident of the Kulanandapur area.

According to police, officers received confidential information on Thursday night that drugs were being traded at the local market. Acting on the information, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Raja Mia of Ghoraghat Police Station conducted an operation in the area.

Several people reportedly fled after noticing the presence of the police. However, officers detained Zakirul at the scene.

During a subsequent search, police recovered a plastic bag containing 198 yaba pills from the folds of his lungi. The officers alleged that he had kept the pills in his possession for sale.

Police have not disclosed further details about the source of the drugs or whether anyone else may have been involved in the alleged drug-related activity. No statement from Zakirul was available regarding the allegations.

Following his detention, Zakirul was taken to the police station. A case was subsequently filed against him under the Narcotics Control Act, and he was formally shown arrested in connection with the case.

Mahmud Hasan, officer-in-charge of Ghoraghat Police Station, said the UP member had been detained with the yaba pills and subsequently named as an accused in the case. He was scheduled to be produced before a court in Dinajpur on Friday afternoon.

The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the recovery of the pills and determine whether anyone else was involved. However, the allegations against Zakirul remain subject to the legal process, and their validity will ultimately be determined through judicial proceedings.
