Durga Puja Holidays to Close Bangladesh’s Banks and Stock Exchanges

Bangladesh’s banking sector and stock markets will observe a five-day suspension of regular operations from Tuesday, 20 October, as the country celebrates Durga Puja. The extended holiday will affect banks and financial institutions across the country, while trading at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) will also remain suspended.

According to the holiday schedule issued by Bangladesh Bank, the Durga Puja public holiday will run from 20 to 22 October. The three-day break will be followed by the regular weekly holidays on Friday, 23 October, and Saturday, 24 October, bringing the total period without normal banking operations to five consecutive days.

To help customers complete essential transactions before the extended closure, banks were open on Saturday, 17 October, operating as they would on a regular working day. The additional working day gave individuals, businesses and other customers an opportunity to settle outstanding payments and complete banking tasks ahead of the festival.

The holiday is expected to affect customers who rely on branch-based services, particularly those requiring direct assistance with cheques, fund transfers and other financial transactions. Businesses with scheduled payments or time-sensitive financial commitments may also need to adjust their arrangements to account for the interruption.

Customers are therefore advised to complete essential transactions before the holiday begins. Although certain digital banking services may remain accessible, their availability and the processing of particular transactions will depend on the arrangements of individual banks.

Limited Banking Services to Remain Available at Ports

Despite the suspension of regular banking operations, selected bank branches and booths in seaports, land ports and airports will continue to provide limited services to support import and export activities.

Bangladesh Bank has instructed the relevant banks to make the necessary arrangements to maintain essential trade-related transactions in port and customs areas throughout the holiday. The banks have been directed to coordinate with local administrations, port authorities and customs officials to ensure that the required services remain available.

The arrangements are particularly significant for businesses engaged in international trade. Import and export operations often depend on timely banking services for payments, trade documentation and other financial formalities associated with the movement and clearance of goods. A complete interruption of these services could delay commercial transactions and disrupt the movement of consignments.

Maintaining limited banking facilities at key transport and customs locations is intended to reduce such disruption. However, the services available during the holiday may vary between branches and facilities. Businesses with urgent requirements should confirm the operating arrangements with their respective banks before making plans.

The provision of limited services at ports does not mean that all banking activities will continue as usual. Routine customer services at most branches will remain suspended during the five-day break.

Trading Suspended at Both Stock Exchanges

The DSE and the CSE will also suspend their regular trading activities throughout the holiday period. Investors will therefore be unable to buy or sell shares through the exchanges during the scheduled closure.

The decision reflects the relationship between banking operations and the financial processes that support securities trading. Banks play an important role in fund transfers, payments and the settlement of financial transactions associated with the stock market. Aligning exchange schedules with the banking holiday helps maintain consistency across the financial system.

For investors, the closure means that regular trading opportunities will be unavailable for five consecutive days. Those planning transactions may wish to review their financial requirements in advance and take account of the holiday when making investment decisions. The exchanges’ official announcements should be consulted for confirmation of the next trading session.

Some banking services, including automated teller machines (ATMs), mobile financial services and digital banking facilities, may remain available during the holiday, subject to the arrangements of individual providers. However, these services cannot necessarily replace all functions performed at bank branches, and certain transactions may take longer to process when normal banking operations are suspended.

Durga Puja is one of the major religious festivals observed by Hindu communities in Bangladesh. The holiday period provides an opportunity for celebration while requiring temporary adjustments to routine financial and commercial activities.

Although normal banking and stock market operations will pause, the provision for limited banking services at ports is intended to help essential import and export activities continue. Customers, businesses and investors should plan accordingly, complete time-sensitive transactions in advance and check the relevant institutions’ announcements regarding the resumption of normal services.
