Fires Destroy Three Textile Waste Warehouses in Gazipur

Three warehouses storing textile waste were destroyed in two separate fire incidents in Konabari, Gazipur, on Monday, 19 October, causing an estimated loss of Tk 5 million, according to the Fire Service.

The fires broke out at different locations in the Konabari area, burning large quantities of discarded fabric and other stored materials. Firefighters responded to both incidents and managed to bring the flames under control. No information about casualties was provided in the initial report.

The first incident occurred in the morning at the warehouses owned by Russell Mia and Enamul Haque in the Government Bari Jame Mosque area of Ambagh Baghia, under Konabari Police Station in Gazipur Metropolitan City.

After receiving information about the fire, two units from the Konabari Modern Fire Service station arrived at the scene. Firefighters worked for approximately two hours before bringing the blaze under control.

A preliminary assessment by the Fire Service suggested that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire. The flames spread through the warehouses, destroying textile waste and other goods stored inside. The estimated property damage from this incident alone was around Tk 3 million.

A separate fire broke out at night at a textile waste warehouse owned by Roni Mia in the Dis Pukurpar area of Ambagh, also within Konabari. Two Fire Service units were dispatched after the incident was reported.

Firefighters took approximately one hour to bring the second blaze under control. According to the Fire Service, the incident caused an estimated loss of Tk 2 million as textile waste and other materials were damaged by the flames.

Mohammad Saiful Islam, warehouse inspector at the Konabari Modern Fire Service station, confirmed that two separate fire incidents had occurred in the Ambagh Baghia area of Konabari. He said the preliminary estimate placed the combined losses at approximately Tk 5 million across the three warehouses.

The causes of the two fires have not been conclusively established in the information provided. While an electrical short circuit was identified as a possible cause of the morning incident, no specific cause was reported for the fire at night.

Textile waste warehouses store discarded fabric and other remnants generated by garment and textile production. Such materials can allow flames to spread rapidly, particularly when stored in large quantities or in closely packed spaces. Electrical faults, damaged wiring and inadequate fire-safety arrangements can also increase the risk of fires in storage facilities.

The two incidents have highlighted the potential financial risks faced by businesses that store textile waste. A definitive assessment of the damage, along with further investigation into the causes, would help establish the circumstances surrounding the fires.
