Police have recovered the decomposed body of an unidentified young man from a pond beside the Shah Makhdum Institute Public Library in Rajshahi, near the Madrasa Ground, where a public rally featuring Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
The body was recovered on the morning of Tuesday, 20 October. Police suspect the man may have died around three days earlier, although the exact circumstances of his death have yet to be established.
Gaziur Rahman, media spokesperson for Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP), confirmed the recovery and provided details of the initial findings. He said the body was found in a pond approximately half a kilometre from Madrasa Ground, the venue for the planned political gathering.
According to the police spokesperson, officers found no visible signs of injury on the deceased’s body during their initial examination. Based on these preliminary observations, investigators believe the man may have fallen into the pond and died by drowning. However, this remains an initial assessment rather than a confirmed explanation.
The condition of the body suggests that the death may have occurred several days before it was discovered. A post-mortem examination will be essential in determining the cause of death and establishing whether drowning or another factor was responsible.
Gaziur Rahman said further details would become available once the post-mortem report had been received. The man’s identity and the precise circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear based on the information released by police.
The discovery comes on a day when Rajshahi was preparing for a major political gathering. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was scheduled to attend a rally at Madrasa Ground at noon as the chief guest. The event was organised by the Rajshahi metropolitan and district units of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The proximity of the recovery site to the rally venue has drawn attention to the incident. However, police have not indicated any connection between the death and the planned political event.
At this stage, the possibility of an accidental fall into the pond remains a preliminary theory. The absence of visible injuries does not, by itself, establish how the man died. The post-mortem findings are expected to provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances.
Further information about the deceased, the cause of death and any subsequent investigative steps had not been made available at the time of the initial report.
