Nurul Haque Nur, former Vice-President of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and current President of the Gono Adhikar Parishad, has strongly criticised those who once inspired people with hope, only to replace those dreams with disillusionment following the events of 5 August.

Speaking as the chief guest at a prize-giving ceremony titled “The July Promise: Expectations vs Reality”, held on Monday (4 August) evening at the Zahir Raihan Auditorium of Jahangirnagar University, Nur delivered a stinging rebuke of the current state of political affairs.

Key Quotes and Observations from Nur’s Speech:

  • “Before the 3 August declaration, the situation had already polarised between fascism and democracy.”
  • “People believed that after the fall of this autocratic regime, a new political structure would emerge—one based on dignity and civil rights. But instead, that hope has turned into profound despair.”
  • “Even after eleven months, the fundamental promises of the movement remain unfulfilled.”
  • “Ironically, those who once made those promises are now the biggest obstacles to their realisation. The people feel deceived and disillusioned.”

He further commented that those forming new platforms in the name of revolution have begun to mirror the behaviour of the Awami League, stating:

“We are witnessing a group that now considers itself above accountability due to political identity. Using the administration as a tool, they have engaged in acts of appropriation and control. Those who once spoke of the ‘spirit’ of the revolution are now walking the same oppressive path.”
