The accident occurred at around 4.30 am on 28 October in the Khan Dighi Shikaripara area, north of Bagichahat in Chandanaish upazila.
According to information available, the bus, registration number Chattogram Metro-B 11-1170, was travelling from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar when the driver lost control as it reached the Khan Dighi Shikaripara area. The vehicle overturned on the highway, injuring at least 20 passengers.
Local residents rushed to the scene after the accident and began helping to rescue those trapped or injured inside the bus. The injured passengers were subsequently taken to Chandanaish Upazila Health Complex, BGC Trust Medical College Hospital and Dohazari Health Complex for treatment.
Several of the injured were reported to be in a serious condition and were transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for more advanced medical care. Their identities were not immediately available.
The overturned bus obstructed the highway, disrupting traffic in both directions. Hundreds of vehicles, including passenger buses and goods lorries, became stranded as traffic built up around the accident site. The disruption caused considerable inconvenience to commuters and passengers travelling along the busy route connecting Chattogram with Cox’s Bazar.
Police from Dohazari Highway Police Station arrived at the scene after receiving information about the accident and began rescue and clearance operations. Recovery vehicles, including a tow truck and a crane, were used to remove the damaged bus from the carriageway.
Once the vehicle had been cleared, traffic gradually resumed and conditions on the highway returned to normal.
Mohammad Nurul Absar, officer-in-charge of Dohazari Highway Police Station, said the injured passengers had been rescued from the accident site and taken to hospitals. He confirmed that traffic movement had been restored after the overturned bus was removed.
The precise cause of the accident had not been established immediately. Although preliminary information indicated that the driver had lost control of the vehicle, further details about the circumstances leading to the crash were not available.
The incident once again highlights the disruption and injuries that can result from accidents involving long-distance passenger buses. Prompt rescue operations and access to medical treatment remain essential in the aftermath of such crashes, particularly on busy inter-district highways. However, the available information did not establish whether road conditions, a mechanical fault or any other factor contributed to Wednesday’s accident.
