Injury Blow for Bangladesh as Towhid Hridoy Stretchered Off Mirpur Test

Bangladesh’s promising middle-order batter Towhid Hridoy suffered a severe setback during the opening day of the first Test against the West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, after a agonizing muscle injury forced him to leave the field on a stretcher.

The unfortunate incident unfolded in the final session of Day 1. While attempting a quick single following a cut shot off the bowling in the 66th over, the right-handed batter experienced acute pain just below his left knee. Unable to continue, Hridoy collapsed onto the turf near the non-striker’s end, prompting the team physiotherapist to rush onto the outfield to deliver immediate medical assistance. With the treatment failing to alleviate his severe discomfort, medical staff quickly brought out a stretcher to transport him safely off the pitch.

This was not the first instance of Hridoy requiring medical intervention during the afternoon. Earlier in the 63rd over, the 24-year-old had already received treatment on the field for visible muscle tightness. Although he bravely attempted to resume his innings after a brief period of respite, the spasms deteriorated rapidly within three overs, rendering him completely unable to carry on.

Before his forced retirement, Hridoy had put together a highly responsible and disciplined display, scoring 42 runs off 84 deliveries. His departure brought a sudden end to an exceptionally promising 88-run partnership for the fourth wicket alongside opening batsman Shadman Islam. Following Hridoy’s departure, Litton Kumar Das stepped out to join Shadman, who remained resolute at the crease, unbeaten on 94 as he approached a well-deserved century.

The exact nature and severity of the injury remain unconfirmed by team management, though initial observations suggest severe muscle cramping or a significant strain. Hridoy had been drafted into the playing eleven to fill the void left by veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, who was sidelined due to an injury of his own. Consequently, Hridoy’s abrupt departure presents a substantial dilemma for the host team’s strategic plans.

Hridoy made his Test debut for Bangladesh against Zimbabwe in Harare on 28 June, where he endured a difficult match, managing a combined total of just 12 runs across both innings. On this occasion, he was fast approaching his maiden Test half-century before physical distress intervened, delaying his pursuit of a landmark moment in his fledgling red-ball career.
