The incident took place on Wednesday night in Madhusudanpur Madhyapara, an area within the upazila. Police arrived at the scene at around 2am on Thursday and recovered the victim’s body.
The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam Azad, who worked in agriculture and also ran a vegetable shop at Nowhata Market in Paba. He had three children, including two daughters who were married. His only son is studying nursing in Dhaka.
According to his wife, Sabina Yasmin, Azad left home on Wednesday night to perform the Isha prayer after locking the house from the outside. However, he did not return, prompting concern as the hours passed.
At around midnight, when her husband had still not come home, Sabina arranged for the lock to be opened using a spare key kept inside the house. Another person helped facilitate access through a window. She subsequently searched the surrounding areas for her husband but was unable to find him.
After looking in several possible places, she went to the rooftop, which can only be accessed from outside the house. There, she discovered her husband lying in a pool of blood.
Sabina said she had heard a noise resembling the sound of a cat jumping around on the rooftop. However, she could not determine what had caused the noise or what had happened there.
Abdul Matin, officer-in-charge of Paba Police Station, said stab wounds were visible on Azad’s neck and other parts of his body. He added that the victim had died at the scene due to excessive blood loss.
Police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue at Rajshahi Medical College for a post-mortem examination. The examination is expected to help establish further details about the nature of the injuries and the cause of death.
According to the officer-in-charge, Azad’s wife was the only other person at home that night. However, she has been unable to provide a clear account of the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Investigators are working to establish who carried out the attack, how it happened and what may have motivated the killing. Police have also indicated that a murder case will be filed in connection with the incident.
The circumstances remain unclear, and no suspect or motive has yet been identified in the information provided by the police. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses and the post-mortem findings become available.
