City Bank, one of Bangladesh’s leading private sector commercial lenders, has registered a remarkable financial performance during the first nine months of the current year, recording a net profit of BDT 867 crore. This represents a robust growth of over 20 per cent compared to the BDT 722 crore net profit recorded during the corresponding period of the previous year, highlighting an absolute increase of BDT 145 crore.
The financial evaluation for the January to September period was formally approved during a meeting of the bank’s Board of Directors on the final working day of the week. Listed on the domestic capital market, the financial institution is scheduled to submit these quarterly disclosures officially to the twin stock exchanges of the country on the forthcoming Sunday to inform retail and institutional investors.
A granular breakdown of the performance indicates that the primary driver behind this earnings momentum was the substantial return generated from sovereign debt instruments. The bank’s earnings from investment in government treasury bills and bonds climbed to BDT 3,002 crore during the nine-month period, up by BDT 227 crore or more than 8 per cent from BDT 2,775 crore earned in the same timeframe last year. In an economic landscape marked by shifting interest rate dynamics, high-yielding government securities provided a resilient buffer for the balance sheet.
Alongside revenue from government securities, the institution experienced a near-doubling of its net interest income, which expanded from BDT 169 crore to BDT 324 crore. This expansion was largely sustained by higher interest earnings from loans and advances, which totaled BDT 4,255 crore in the first nine months, compared to BDT 4,026 crore in the previous year—a gain of BDT 229 crore. Crucially, the growth in interest expense paid on deposits remained well-contained. The bank disbursed BDT 3,931 crore in deposit interest during this period, representing a modest increase of just BDT 74 crore over the BDT 3,857 crore incurred in the prior period.
The bank also achieved significant expansion in its balance sheet footprint and overall asset base up to 30 September 2026. Consolidated total assets expanded dramatically to BDT 104,008 crore from BDT 84,720 crore reported at the end of December 2025. Total customer deposits surged to BDT 77,404 crore, rising from BDT 63,170 crore recorded in December.
Meanwhile, total loans and advances grew to BDT 54,585 crore from BDT 50,616 crore at the end of the previous calendar year. Reflecting the accumulation of underlying earnings and strengthened capitalization, the net asset value per share (NAVPS) rose to BDT 41.51 as of September 2026, up from BDT 35.37 at the close of December 2025. Following a total annual profit of BDT 1,324 crore in the preceding year, the bank remains firmly on track for another strong financial closing.
