TikTok Dispute Triggers Massive Violent Clash in Brahmanbaria, 20 Injured

A trivial dispute stemming from a social media video escalated into a violent clash between two local factional groups in Brahmanbaria’s Ashuganj upazila, leaving at least 20 people injured and shutting down a major commercial hub.

The violence erupted on Saturday afternoon at Ashuganj Bazaar as rival members of the Abirpara and Nakarpara factions took to the streets armed with improvised weapons. Eyewitnesses reported widespread panic throughout the market area, forcing shopkeepers to pull down their shutters as brickbats were hurled across the crowded thoroughfare.

According to local authorities and community leaders, the feud originated within Durgapur Union’s Sohagpur village amongst four young associates: Siam and Fahad belonging to the Abirpara clan, and Arif and Bokkor from the Nakarpara clan. A disagreement over a short video reel posted on TikTok on Thursday quickly deteriorated into personal animosity. Tensions simmered throughout Friday, prompting senior community leaders to intervene.

In an effort to prevent further unrest, local elders convened an arbitration meeting at Ashuganj Bazaar on Saturday morning. Despite reaching a temporary settlement during the formal mediation, hostility reignited almost immediately after the gathering adjourned. Members from both sides regrouped with bamboo sticks, iron rods, and sharp instruments, engaging in prolonged chases and counter-chases across the marketplace.

Police forces rushed to the scene and eventually restored order alongside local residents. The injured were subsequently admitted to the Ashuganj Upazila Health Complex and various local private clinics for treatment.

“We received information that a clash broke out between two factional groups over a video posted on TikTok,” stated Md Anisur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Ashuganj Police Station. “Police acted swiftly to bring the situation under control, and the atmosphere in the area is currently calm. Although neither party has filed a formal written complaint yet, legal proceedings regarding the breach of peace are underway.”

Such localized territorial rivalries, locally known as gosthi conflicts, remain a persistent socio-cultural challenge across rural areas of Brahmanbaria. Historically triggered by land disagreements or village politics, these traditional group dynamics are increasingly being sparked by arguments originating on digital platforms, demonstrating the growing impact of online interactions on real-world public safety.
