Five-Vehicle Crash Claims Van Driver’s Life in Gopalganj

A road accident involving five vehicles on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Kashiani, Gopalganj, has left a van driver dead and at least 10 people injured. The injured include the driver of a covered van.

The accident took place at around 7.30 am on Tuesday (3 November) near the Bhatiapara roundabout in Kashiani upazila. Several vehicles, including passenger buses, a covered van and a local bus, were involved in the collision.

The deceased has been identified as Shahidul Islam, son of Amin Sheikh, from North Charbhatpara village in Kashiani upazila. He was driving a van and was beside the highway when the accident occurred.

According to local residents and police sources, an Imad Paribahan bus travelling from Khulna to Dhaka reached the Bhatiapara roundabout when it collided head-on with a covered van coming from the opposite direction towards Gopalganj.

The initial impact triggered a series of collisions involving other vehicles nearby. A Dola Paribahan bus and a local bus operating in Gopalganj were also struck, bringing the total number of vehicles involved in the accident to five.

Shahidul Islam, who was near the roadside at the time, sustained critical injuries and died at the scene. The collision also left 10 people injured, including the covered van driver. The extent of injuries among the other victims was not immediately known.

Following the incident, personnel from the Bhatiapara Fire Service and Highway Police rushed to the scene. They took part in the rescue operation and recovered the injured passengers and driver before transporting them to the 100-bed Kashiani Upazila Health Complex for medical treatment.

The accident caused concern among local residents and disrupted traffic along the busy Dhaka-Khulna Highway. The involvement of several vehicles in a single collision also made the rescue operation particularly challenging.

The Dhaka-Khulna Highway is an important transport route connecting the capital with the south-western districts of Bangladesh. Passenger buses, goods vehicles and local transport regularly use the road. Busy intersections and roundabouts can become accident-prone areas, particularly when vehicles approach from opposite directions or fail to maintain safe distances.

However, the precise circumstances that led to Tuesday morning’s collision have yet to be established. Further investigation will be needed to determine how the initial impact occurred and what caused the subsequent collisions.

Confirming the incident, Muntasir Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bhatiapara Highway Police Station, said one person had been killed and 10 others injured.

He added that legal proceedings in connection with the accident were under way.
