Fire at Dhanmondi High-Rise Brought Under Control, No Injuries

A fire broke out in a flat on the second floor of a 14-storey residential building in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 4.18pm after responding with two fire service units. No casualties or injuries were reported.

The fire was reported at around 3.30pm at House No. 27 on Road 10/A in Dhanmondi. Following the alert, two units from the Mohammadpur Fire Station were dispatched to the scene and arrived at approximately 3.42pm. Firefighters immediately began efforts to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the building.

After around 36 minutes of firefighting operations, the teams successfully brought the fire under control at 4.18pm.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence had also mobilised two additional units from the Palashi Fire Station to provide support. However, as the two Mohammadpur-based units were able to manage the situation, the additional teams were no longer required and were being sent back, officials said.

Anwarul Islam, an official at the Fire Service media cell, confirmed the incident. He said two units from the Mohammadpur Fire Station had taken part in the operation, while the two units dispatched from Palashi were being withdrawn because their assistance was no longer necessary.

Although the fire broke out inside a residential flat in a multi-storey building, no one was reported injured or killed. The prompt response by firefighters helped bring the situation under control before it developed into a more serious emergency.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been established. Details about the extent of damage to the flat and its contents were also not immediately available.

The incident once again highlights the importance of fire safety arrangements in Dhaka’s densely populated residential neighbourhoods, where multi-storey buildings are common. Fires in such structures can pose significant risks, particularly when smoke spreads through staircases and shared spaces or when residents have limited access to emergency exits.

Fire safety experts generally stress the importance of maintaining functional fire extinguishers, keeping emergency staircases and exits clear, and ensuring that residents are familiar with evacuation procedures. Early reporting and a swift response from emergency services can also play a crucial role in limiting damage and preventing casualties.

In this incident, the fire was brought under control within less than an hour of the initial report, and no casualties were recorded. Further information about its cause and the extent of property damage is awaited.
