Five Injured as Rival Student Groups Clash in Pirojpur

At least five individuals have been injured, two of them critically, following a violent clash between rival factions of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) over territorial dominance in Pirojpur town. The confrontation erupted around 7:00 pm on Tuesday in the town’s Old Bus Stand area, prompting law enforcement officers to detain one youth, identified as Nafis, for his alleged involvement in the violence.

Local sources revealed that tensions between the two opposing factions of the student wing had been simmering for a considerable period over controlling local influence. The feud escalated sharply on Monday evening when supporters from one faction physically assaulted a rival member with a hammer. Seeking retaliation for the previous day’s attack, both groups armed themselves with sharp weapons and confronted each other on Tuesday evening, leading to a fierce street battle that sent panic through local shopkeepers and passers-by.

Five persons sustained injuries during the clash. The victims have been identified as Jihad Matubbar, son of Mizan Matubbar from Zianagar upazila; Naim, son of Mahidul from Jujkhola village in Sadar upazila; Shan from Mashimpur village; Tashfi, son of Mithu from Kalibari area; and Nirob, son of Awal from Shikarpur village.

Due to the severity of his sharp-weapon wounds, Jihad Matubbar was transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment after receiving emergency first aid locally. The remaining four injured individuals received medical care at a local healthcare facility.

Commenting on the violent outbreak, Pirojpur District JCD President Salauddin Kumar stated that whilst he was currently in Dhaka for organisational duties, he had been briefed regarding the incident. He assured that strict disciplinary action would be taken against any student wing member found guilty of participating in the violent brawl following an internal enquiry.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Pirojpur Sadar Police Station, Md. Shariful Islam, stated that five members from both sides were injured in the clash. He confirmed the detention of one suspect and added that police personnel were deployed to restore order, with formal legal proceedings currently underway against those involved.
