Monali Thakur Kept Her Marriage Secret for Three Whole Years

Music was an integral part of Monali Thakur’s life from early childhood. Steeped in rich musical traditions, she received formal training in Indian classical music under the tutelage of renowned maestros Pandit Jagdish Prasad and Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty.

Although her artistic journey began in acting, destiny steered her towards the musical stage. By the age of 14, the Kolkata-born artist had already clinched multiple provincial awards, proving her versatile talent in singing and stage performance. Her mainstream breakthrough arrived when she competed in the second season of Indian Idol, securing a place among the top ten contestants and capturing national attention.

The turning point in her career came in 2008 with the playback track Zara Zara Touch Me from the film Race, composed by Pritam. The song transformed her into an overnight sensation. Despite receiving numerous offers for glamourous item numbers following this instant hit, she refused to be pigeonholed. In 2013, her rendition of Sawaar Loon from Lootera earned her widespread critical acclaim, establishing her as a vocalist of exceptional depth.

Her crowning achievement arrived in 2015 when she won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Moh Moh Ke Dhage from the movie Dum Laga Ke Haisha. This soulful track cemented her status amongst Bollywood’s finest female playback singers.

Parallel to her musical pursuits, Monali maintained a successful acting career. As a child, she starred in the popular Bengali television serial Aalokitok Ek Indu. She made her feature film debut in Raja Sen’s Bengali period drama Krishnakanter Will. Later, she took on the titular role in Nagesh Kukunoor’s Bollywood drama Lakshmi, a poignant film focusing on human trafficking and child exploitation. Her portrayal of a 15-year-old victim earned considerable praise from critics.

Behind her luminous professional achievements lay a quietly guarded personal life. In 2017, Monali married Maik Riek, a Swiss restaurateur and hotelier. Remarkably, the couple managed to keep their union entirely secret from the media and the public for three full years before revealing the news.
