Two people, including a Jubo Dal leader, were injured in a series of clashes between rival factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Fatikchhari upazila of Chattogram, reportedly over an internal political dispute. One of the injured, identified as Jubo Dal activist Ghoshona Kabir, is in a critical condition after being stabbed.
The violence also triggered protests and a road blockade by supporters of one faction, disrupting traffic along the Feni-Khagrachhari regional highway for nearly two hours. Protesters set tyres on fire on the road, leaving vehicles stranded on both sides and causing considerable inconvenience to passengers and other road users.
The clashes took place near Heyako Bazar in the upazila on Saturday night, 7 November. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhujpur Police Station Bipul Chandra De confirmed the incident on Sunday morning, 8 November.
According to local sources, tensions between the two BNP factions began at around 9.30pm on Saturday over an internal dispute. The disagreement subsequently escalated into physical confrontations, during which two people were stabbed.
The injured were identified as Nasir Uddin Biplob, a Jubo Dal leader, and Ghoshona Kabir, a Jubo Dal activist. Biplob is known locally as a supporter of current Member of Parliament Sarwar Alamgir, while Kabir is associated with the group aligned with Colonel Azim Ullah Bahar Chowdhury.
Following the incident, local residents rescued the injured men and took them to Ramgarh and Fatikchhari Upazila Health Complexes for medical attention. As Kabir’s condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for further treatment. Biplob remains under treatment at Fatikchhari Upazila Health Complex.
The clashes were followed by further tension in the area, as supporters of one faction took to the Feni-Khagrachhari regional highway in protest. They blocked the road and set fire to tyres, bringing traffic to a standstill. Vehicles travelling in both directions were unable to proceed, disrupting movement along the important regional route.
The blockade continued for approximately two hours. Police personnel eventually intervened, engaged with supporters of both factions and took steps to restore order. The protesters subsequently withdrew from the road, allowing traffic to resume.
OC Bipul Chandra De said police received information about the clashes at around 10pm on Saturday. Members of the Dantmara Police Outpost were dispatched to the scene, followed by additional personnel from the police station to bring the situation under control.
He said officers managed to calm members of both groups and remove the blockade, restoring normal traffic movement on the highway.
The incident has once again brought attention to tensions arising from internal political divisions at the local level. While police intervention helped restore order and reopen the highway, the condition of the two injured men, particularly Kabir, remains a major concern.
