US President Donald Trump described his meeting on Monday with Lip-Bu Tan, the CEO of US chipmaker Intel, as a “very interesting” encounter. This comes just days after Trump publicly demanded Tan’s immediate resignation over concerns related to national security.

Details of the Meeting

  • Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he met with Tan alongside Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent.
  • He praised Tan’s professional journey, calling it “an amazing story.”
  • Trump also mentioned that members of his cabinet will spend more time with Tan and provide him with suggestions next week.

Intel did not issue any comment in response to requests for a statement.

Background: Calls for Resignation and National Security Concerns

Last Thursday, Trump urged Tan to step down immediately, citing a “highly conflicted” position due to Tan’s alleged links to Chinese firms, a concern initially raised by a Republican senator.

“The CEO of INTEL is highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

In response, Tan released a statement asserting that Intel was actively engaging with the Trump administration to clarify the concerns and ensure officials “have the facts.”

Intel’s Position and Tan’s Background

Intel, a cornerstone of Silicon Valley’s tech industry, has seen its market dominance challenged by Asian semiconductor giants such as TSMC and Samsung, leaders in the custom semiconductor manufacturing sector.

Lip-Bu Tan, originally from Malaysia, became CEO of Intel in March during a difficult period for the company. Since his appointment, Intel has announced layoffs amid a market complicated by White House tariffs and export restrictions.

Tan addressed the controversy surrounding his previous affiliations with Walden International and Cadence Design Systems, stating:

“There has been a lot of misinformation circulating about my past roles. I have always operated within the highest legal and ethical standards.”

Intel’s traditional strength lies in chips used for conventional computing, a market now being increasingly overtaken by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
