Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser, has emphasised that reform remains the nation’s highest priority. He stated that the government is working diligently to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election in February 2026, with the goal of transferring power to representatives genuinely chosen by the people. Professor Yunus reaffirmed the commitment to strengthen democracy and return authority to its rightful owners – the citizens.
He made these remarks on Wednesday (13 August) during a special convocation ceremony at University Kebangsaan Malaysia, where he was awarded an honorary Doctorate degree in recognition of his contributions to social business.
Vision for a Strong and Stable Bangladesh
Professor Yunus outlined a clear strategy and unwavering determination for the country’s progress:
He reflected on the July–August 2024 youth-led mass movement, stating that it revitalised the nation’s identity and aspirations for the future. “Today, we are building a new Bangladesh where governance is just, the economy is inclusive, and every individual has a fair opportunity to succeed. Our government is focused on ensuring peace and stability, strengthening democracy, and restoring power to its rightful owners – the people,” he said.
Journey from Economics to Social Business
Professor Yunus described the guiding principle of his career:
“People are not poor because they lack talent or dreams; they are poor because the system has never provided them with a fair opportunity. Our financial system was built to serve the wealthy, not the poor.”
This insight motivated him to create mechanisms through which even the poorest individuals could access microcredit, start businesses, and transform their lives. From his work as an economist to the founding of Grameen Bank, from initiating microfinance to expanding social business, this belief has been the driving force behind his achievements.
Honorary Doctorate: A Recognition for the People of Bangladesh
Receiving the honorary doctorate, Professor Yunus said, “This is a great privilege, not just for me but on behalf of the people of Bangladesh, whose courage, resilience, and hope propel me forward.”
He also highlighted the responsibility the award entails, particularly towards empowering youth:
“This recognition reminds me of my duty to work for the dreams of young people. Last year, many of them bravely opposed a fascist government in Bangladesh. Hundreds of students and youth dedicated their lives for a better future – one where everyone can live with dignity, free from fear, discrimination, and injustice.”
