BNP-NCP Clash Over Stage Seating Causes Disorder at Faridpur Event

A clash between BNP and NCP leaders over stage seating disrupted a tree-planting inauguration in Bhanga, Faridpur, organised by a local social organisation. The incident occurred when BNP leaders were denied a place on the stage and confronted an NCP leader, causing temporary chaos that was later controlled by senior BNP figures.

The event took place on Tuesday, 12 August, at around 4:30 pm in the grounds of West Patrail Government Primary School, Azimnagar Union, Bhanga Upazila. The programme was organised by the Satsang Social Development Society.

According to reports, the NCP Upazila Convenor, Md. Ashraf Hossain, was allocated a seat on the stage. Also present were Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Mizanur Rahman and officials from various government departments. BNP leaders were not given stage seating and were instead placed in the front row, which they perceived as an insult. Angered, they confronted Md. Ashraf Hossain, leading to a verbal clash between the two groups.

Accounts from Participants:

Ayub Molla, BNP leader, claimed that the UNO had been giving the NCP leader rides in her official car and attending various events with him, which locals considered unusual. Eyewitnesses reported that while attempting to protect the NCP leader, the UNO also came under BNP criticism.

Upon receiving the news, Shahidul Islam, attending a nearby political meeting, arrived at the scene and helped calm tensions, after which the programme proceeded normally.

Golam Mortaza, General Secretary of the organising society, said:

“This is a social event, and no political leaders were formally invited. I am unaware of when the NCP leader entered the stage. Following the controversy, I stepped down from the stage.”

Khandakar Iqbal Hossain, former president of Bhanga Upazila BNP, noted that the incident was due to a misunderstanding, which was later resolved.

Md. Ashraf Hossain, NCP leader, stated:

“When BNP workers attempted to harass me, the UNO protected me, and Shahidul Islam later ensured that those who confronted me expressed regret. I myself also expressed regret over the incident.”

UNO Md. Mizanur Rahman confirmed:

“BNP leaders were angered by the seating arrangement for the NCP convenor. The situation returned to normal following the intervention of Shahidul Islam and Khandakar Iqbal.”
