Case Filed Against Sheikh Hasina, 54 AL Leaders Over Khulna Attack

A case has been filed in Khulna against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina along with 54 leaders of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, on charges of attempted murder, use of explosives, and violation of the Arms Act. The allegations stem from an attack on students and ordinary citizens during the 2024 ‘March for Justice’ programme in Khulna.

The Khulna Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court has taken the case into cognisance and instructed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to conduct an inquiry.

  • The case was lodged on 12 August 2024 by Sajidul Islam Bappi, former Central Joint Coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
  • On 17 August 2024, the court accepted the case and directed the PBI to investigate.

 

The case names 55 individuals as accused, including several senior political figures, former MPs, police officials, and student leaders.

According to the First Information Report (FIR):

  • On 31 July 2024 at around 12:00 noon, members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement brought out a procession as part of the ‘March for Justice’.
  • When the rally reached Satrasta intersection, attackers—allegedly acting on the instructions of the first ten accused—launched an assault using shotguns, pistols, bombs, and bricks.
  • At least 15–20 people sustained injuries in the attack.

Further allegations state:

  • The injured were taken to a local clinic, but attackers followed and carried out another assault.
  • During the assault at Garib Newaz Clinic, accused numbers 8 and 36 allegedly forced the injured into a police van instead of providing them treatment.

 

Advocate Kamal Hossain, representing the plaintiff, confirmed: “The case has been filed under charges of attempted murder, possession of explosives, and arms offences. The court has accepted the case and directed the PBI to carry out a thorough investigation.”
