European Union to Provide Funding to Bangladesh Election Commission for International-Standard Elections

The European Union (EU) has announced a support package of over €4 million for the Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh to facilitate the organisation of elections meeting international standards.

The announcement was made on Tuesday after a meeting between the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal and the EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, Michael Miller.

Ambassador Michael Miller stated: “The EU is acting as a partner in Bangladesh’s transformation towards democratic elections. In addition to focusing on voter education, the EC’s capacity will be strengthened through expert assistance in effective planning and dispute resolution.”

He further explained that the EU is prioritising the deployment of potential observer missions for Bangladesh’s upcoming elections, in consultation with the caretaker government and the EC.

Michael Miller added that electoral experts from the European Partnership for Democracy were also present during the discussions. They emphasised the importance of citizen-led observation to ensure freedom, efficiency, and accountability in the electoral process.

Upcoming EU Technical Mission

A technical team from the EU is scheduled to visit Bangladesh next month. Miller clarified that:

  • This will not be a full-fledged observation mission.
  • The team will assess whether the environment is suitable for sending a full election observation mission.
