United Turn Away, Turkish Club Unappealing – What Lies Ahead for Emiliano Martínez?

The transfer deadline for most European leagues closed on Monday, drawing the curtains on a window of high drama and last-minute manoeuvres. In England, Italy, France, and Germany, the window shut a few hours before Spain followed suit. Among those anxiously waiting for news until the very last moment was World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who had hoped to secure a dream move to Manchester United.

However, the Argentine shot-stopper was left disappointed as United opted to bring in Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens instead. This decision effectively ended speculation about Martínez replacing André Onana, whose performances have been under heavy criticism. The Aston Villa goalkeeper had even received a farewell-like ovation from Villa supporters at the end of the 2024–25 season, fuelling rumours of his departure.

According to The Athletic, as the window neared its end, Martínez personally reached out to his international teammate Lisandro Martínez, who plays for United, urging him to speak to the club’s hierarchy. In addition, during June and July, Martínez held talks with United’s Portuguese coach, Rúben Amorim, over a possible transfer. Amorim reportedly believed the Argentine’s leadership qualities and experience would be invaluable to the squad.

Despite these efforts, United only made a loan offer for the 32-year-old goalkeeper. Aston Villa rejected this outright, deeming it unacceptable. Financial constraints then became a stumbling block. Martínez, who is contracted with Villa until 2029, reportedly earns more than Onana, making a deal complex. Moreover, Villa demanded a transfer fee exceeding £30 million, further complicating matters.

Unable to reach an agreement, Manchester United shifted their focus to Lammens, signing him from Royal Antwerp for €18 million. While United were sealing this deal, Martínez departed Villa’s training camp to join the Argentina national team for September’s World Cup qualifying matches under coach Lionel Scaloni. His dreams of completing a medical at Old Trafford and signing for United faded into the background.

Meanwhile, Daily Mail reported that Turkish giants Galatasaray made a €21.6 million bid for Martínez. Yet, the goalkeeper declined the offer, showing reluctance to move to Turkey. With the Turkish transfer window still open for another week, the situation remains fluid, though a move appears unlikely.

Earlier, Martínez had also rejected approaches from clubs in Saudi Arabia, signalling his preference to remain in Europe’s top leagues. As things stand, the Argentine looks set to continue at Aston Villa, though questions linger about his relationship with coach Unai Emery, which is reportedly strained due to ongoing transfer speculation.

For now, Martínez’s immediate focus shifts to representing Argentina in their World Cup qualifiers. Long-term, the keeper faces uncertainty: Will he mend fences at Aston Villa and continue as their number one, or will another opportunity arise in January? His rejection of both Turkish and Saudi offers suggests he is holding out for another chance at a top European club.

The coming months will reveal whether Martínez can re-establish stability at Villa Park or whether he will once again be at the centre of transfer drama when the next window opens.
