Late-Night Visit to JAKSU Election Office Sparks Controversy

On the eve of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JAKSU) election, Muhibur Rahman Muhib, president of the university committee of Islami Chhatra Shibir, reportedly visited the JAKSU Election Commission office late at night with three specific demands. A video of the incident has already gone viral on social media.

The Incident

  • The visit took place around midnight on Wednesday, 10 September, at the Election Commission office located in the Senate Building of the university.
  • Muhibur Rahman Muhib is a former student of the Department of Bengali, 2017-18 session (Batch 47).
  • The viral video shows Muhib sitting alone in the empty election office, which has sparked protests among current students on social media.

Shah Md. Faisal, Joint Convenor of the JUB Students’ League, condemned the action: “He is a non-student. There was no reason for him to go to the Election Commission office at such a late hour. We consider this act malicious and strongly protest it, urging the commission to take appropriate action.”

Muhib defended his visit, saying: “I went there because the university administration has prohibited former students from entering the campus. Yet, hundreds of former leaders and activists from student parties continue to roam the campus.
Our demand was that every panel should receive a fixed number of observer cards to know exactly who can be present. I went to the Election Commission to discuss this.”

Professor Mohammad Mafruhi Sattar, a member of the JAKSU Election Commission, confirmed the incident: “It is true that he came to our office. He came on behalf of his organisation with three demands, which he communicated to us before leaving.”

Rules and Violations

  • On 9 September, the university registrar (acting), Dr. A.B.M. Azizur Rahman, issued a notice stating that from 10 September at 12:00 pm until 12 September, no former students, guests, or any outsiders are allowed to remain in residential halls or on campus.
  • Since Muhib is a former student, his presence violated university rules.
