Gunman Kills Three Police Officers, Injures Two in Eastern US

A gunman opened fire on five police officers on Wednesday in the eastern US state of Pennsylvania, leaving three officers dead and two seriously injured, before being killed at the scene, senior police officials confirmed.

“I can confirm that there were five law enforcement officers who were shot today, three fatally,” said State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris, adding that two officers were taken to hospital in critical condition.

The officers had attended an address as part of a domestic violence investigation when they came under fire.

“I can confirm that the shooter is dead,” Commissioner Paris said, confirming that the suspect was shot by police at the scene.

He also reassured the public that there was no ongoing threat, while noting that an investigation was underway.

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon in the Township of Codorus, York County, approximately 130 miles (210 kilometres) southwest of Philadelphia.

“There are many details, which at this point we are not prepared to release, given the ongoing nature of the investigation,” Paris added.

The two injured officers remain in critical but stable condition.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro described the incident as:

“An absolutely tragic and devastating day for York County and for the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”

Authorities have urged the public to stay calm while the investigation continues.
