In Savar, a senior BNP leader and his brother have been fined BDT 100,000 for the illegal use of gas through unauthorised connections at their residence. The operation, carried out on Monday, 16 March, underscores ongoing enforcement measures by the energy authorities against unlawful gas usage.
According to officials from the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources, the action targeted the house of Golam Mostofa, located in Kalma area of Sadar Union. The raid was led by Executive Magistrate Milton Roy following specific complaints regarding the illicit gas connections.
Golam Mostofa serves as the General Secretary of the BNP in Savar Thana and is a former chairman of the Union Parishad. Reports indicate that he, along with his brother Arshad Ali, had been using gas illegally for an extended period, both at their home and associated factory premises. Authorities noted that previous inspections had already led to the disconnection of unlawful connections, but fresh unauthorised usage had resumed.
During the raid, officials discovered an illegal riser concealed within a reinforced water tank inside Arshad Ali’s residence. The riser was subsequently confiscated, and the illicit connection was formally disconnected. As Arshad Ali was absent during the operation, the Executive Magistrate imposed the fine on his wife. She has been ordered to pay BDT 100,000, with a default penalty of seven days’ imprisonment without remission.
Commenting on the incident via mobile, Golam Mostofa stated: “I am currently abroad performing Umrah and cannot provide detailed information. However, I understand that my brother has been fined. I have no involvement in these matters.”
The Department of Energy and Mineral Resources emphasised that such enforcement actions are part of routine monitoring to ensure compliance with gas usage regulations and prevent public safety hazards.
Summary of Enforcement Action:
| Name | Position/Relation | Offence | Penalty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golam Mostofa | BNP Savar Thana General Secretary, former UP Chairman | Illegal gas usage at residence | No personal fine; claims no involvement |

| Arshad Ali’s wife | Spouse | Held responsible in Arshad Ali’s absence | BDT 100,000 fine; 7-day default imprisonment |
Authorities have reiterated that residents must report or avoid any unauthorised gas connections to prevent legal consequences and ensure safety. This latest enforcement in Kalma area serves as a stern reminder that regulatory compliance is being actively monitored, and violations will not be tolerated.
The operation highlights the government’s continued vigilance in curbing illegal energy consumption, emphasising both accountability and public safety across the region.
