A dispute over the ordering of names on a party list escalated into violent clashes between activists of Jubo Dal and Swechchhasebak Dal in Rupganj, Narayanganj, on Friday night, leaving one local leader dead and at least three others injured. The incident took place in the Trishkahania area of Kanchan municipality during preparations for a neighbourhood-level political meeting.
The victim, identified as Azahar Kanchan, served as the vice-president of the Swechchhasebak Dal in Ward No. 9 of Kanchan municipality. According to local residents and party sources, tensions flared when organisers were compiling a list of participants and volunteers for a courtyard meeting. A disagreement arose over whose names should appear earlier on the list—an issue that, while seemingly procedural, often reflects questions of influence and standing within grassroots party structures.
Eyewitnesses reported that an initially verbal exchange quickly descended into shoving and then open fighting between supporters of the two allied youth wings. In the chaos, Azahar Kanchan was struck and fell to the ground, sustaining critical injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital by residents, where doctors pronounced him dead shortly after arrival. Three other individuals were admitted with injuries; two were later discharged after treatment, while one remained under medical observation.
The incident prompted heightened security in the neighbourhood as police moved to prevent reprisals. Shops in the immediate vicinity closed early on Friday night, and local leaders convened informal talks to calm supporters from both sides. Community figures expressed concern that internal disputes over minor organisational matters are increasingly spilling into violence, eroding public trust and endangering lives.
The Officer-in-Charge of Rupganj Police Station, Sabujel Hossain, said police had reached the scene promptly after receiving reports of the clash. He added that legal action would be taken upon receipt of a formal complaint and that efforts were under way to identify those directly involved in the assault. The body was sent for post-mortem examination as part of standard procedure, and investigators were collecting statements from witnesses and party officials present at the meeting.
Political observers note that disputes over lists, positions, and precedence at the local level frequently signal deeper rivalries over influence and access to resources. Without clear internal mechanisms for mediation, such rivalries can quickly turn violent. Civil society representatives urged party leaderships to establish transparent processes for selecting meeting participants and office-bearers, alongside disciplinary measures to deter factionalism and street-level violence.
