Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, the convener of the Inquilab Manch and a potential independent candidate for Dhaka-8, remains in a critical condition after being shot by unidentified assailants. Currently on life support at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, Hadi’s situation continues to raise grave concerns about both political violence and the effectiveness of law enforcement in the capital.
A particularly alarming development has emerged from statements by Inquilab Manch activist and Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) member Fatima Tasnim Zuma. In a recent social media post, she alleged that accomplices of the would-be assassin had followed the attackers to the hospital itself, indicating a highly organised and audacious network behind the attack. According to Zuma, this was far from an isolated incident; the operation involved multiple participants with a coordinated plan, rather than a single perpetrator acting alone.
Two days after the attack, the assailants remain at large, raising questions about the responsiveness and commitment of the law enforcement authorities. Zuma highlighted that one of the suspects had previously been arrested, and all relevant information about them is reportedly already in the possession of law enforcement agencies. The fact that the suspect has not yet been apprehended has led to significant frustration and disbelief among political activists and the public alike.
Zuma also expressed her belief that the main suspect has not fled the country. She suggested that narratives claiming the assailant has escaped could be part of a strategy to evade responsibility or receive indirect assistance for a potential escape. This observation underscores the complexity of the security threat, highlighting a network that is both operational and capable of circumventing existing protective measures.
Most strikingly, Zuma reiterated that accomplices of the attackers had reached the hospital premises, illustrating the extent to which the syndicate is active and organised. She stressed the need for immediate, strengthened security measures, not only for Hadi but also for other political activists and associates who might be targeted. She concluded by asserting that the syndicate should be captured alive and brought to justice, emphasising that patience among activists is limited, and delays could exacerbate risks.
Political analysts note that this incident exemplifies a disturbing pattern of targeted violence against emerging political figures in Bangladesh. Beyond the immediate threat to Hadi, the brazen nature of the attack exposes vulnerabilities in law enforcement and raises questions about broader systemic issues in ensuring political and civic safety.
