In an extraordinary turn of events, Asif Afridi made his debut for the Pakistan national cricket team at the age of 38 years and 299 days, an age when most cricketers are considering retirement rather than their first international appearance.

Afridi, a left-arm spin all-rounder, earned his maiden call-up during the home Test series against South Africa. Although he was not included in the playing eleven for the first Test, he finally got his chance in the second Test, held in Rawalpindi on Monday. The honour of presenting Afridi with his Test cap went to star pacer Shaheen Afridi, making him Pakistan’s 260th Test cricketer.

Afridi’s journey to international cricket has been far from conventional. Previously, he was suspended for corruption-related charges, receiving a two-year ban with a one-year suspension in 2022 under anti-corruption regulations. After serving his sanction, he returned to domestic cricket and worked diligently to regain form and credibility.

His recent performances in the domestic circuit caught the selectors’ attention. Afridi has played 57 first-class matches, claiming 198 wickets and scoring 1,630 runs with the bat, demonstrating his all-round capabilities and fitness at an age when most players are winding down their careers.

In Pakistan cricket history, only one player made a Test debut at an older age. Off-spinner Miran Bakhsh debuted against India in Lahore in January 1955 at 47 years and 284 days.

Globally, the record for the oldest Test debut belongs to Ed Joyce, who played for Ireland in 2018 at the age of 39 years and 231 days.

Even further back in history, the ultimate record remains virtually untouchable: James Southerton of England, who played in cricket’s very first Test in 1877, was 49 years and 119 days old.

Afridi’s late bloom into international cricket is a testament to perseverance, resilience, and passion for the game, proving that age is just a number when determination and performance speak louder.
