Aftab Ahmed Labels Bangladesh Cricket Crisis ‘Circus’

Bangladesh cricket has once again been drawn into controversy amid continuing administrative instability within its governing body, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Former national opener Aftab Ahmed has delivered a strongly worded condemnation of the situation, describing the ongoing turmoil as a “circus” and questioning the repeated leadership changes that have unsettled the sport since last year’s political transition.

The instability began following the political shift on 5 August 2024, which brought an end to the long-standing tenure of former BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon. His departure closed more than a decade of continuity at the helm of Bangladesh cricket, but was quickly followed by a period of frequent administrative reshuffles.

In the span of roughly 20 months, the board has seen three different leadership figures take charge—Faruk Ahmed, Aminul Islam Bulbul, and former national captain Tamim Iqbal—reflecting what many observers describe as an unprecedented phase of instability in the country’s cricket governance.

The latest development came when the National Sports Council (NSC) dissolved Bulbul’s committee, citing alleged irregularities in the BCB election process. Following this intervention, an 11-member ad hoc committee headed by Tamim Iqbal has assumed responsibility for running the board.

Recent Leadership Changes in BCB

Period Leadership Position
Pre–August 2024 (10+ years) Nazmul Hassan Papon BCB President
Post–political transition Faruk Ahmed Interim leadership role
Subsequent phase Aminul Islam Bulbul Committee head
Current structure Tamim Iqbal Head of 11-member ad hoc committee

Aftab Ahmed’s Criticism

Speaking in a video message shared on social media, Aftab Ahmed—regarded as one of Bangladesh’s early aggressive top-order batters—expressed deep frustration over the ongoing administrative uncertainty.

Now residing in the United States, he compared Bangladesh cricket administration to a public spectacle, suggesting that the situation has deteriorated to the point where governance itself resembles entertainment. He remarked that even purchasing a ticket would not be wasted, as the unfolding developments could be viewed as a “performance”.

He further described the current state of affairs as the “biggest circus” in the country’s sporting landscape, pointing to repeated leadership changes and continuing controversies as evidence of systemic instability.

Comparison with United States Cricket Structure

Drawing on his experience living and working in the United States, Aftab contrasted the visibility of cricket governance in Bangladesh with what he described as the relatively low-profile nature of cricket administration in America.

He noted that during his three years in the United States, he has had little awareness of the structure or membership of the local cricket governing body. However, he emphasised that this lack of visibility has not affected his ability to remain actively involved in cricket development work.

According to him, while ignorance of administrative structures in the United States might be seen as a personal limitation, in Bangladesh the situation is reversed, where governance matters are constantly in the public domain due to intense media scrutiny and political attention.

“No One Can Escape Awareness”

Aftab further argued that in Bangladesh, no one connected to cricket can realistically claim ignorance of administrative affairs, as developments within the BCB are continuously amplified by media coverage. Even those who do not actively follow governance issues, he suggested, are inevitably exposed to them due to their prominence in national discourse.

He criticised the recurring cycle of instability and questioned how long such disruption could continue without meaningful institutional reform.

Broader Concerns Over Stability

The remarks reflect wider concerns over governance continuity within Bangladesh cricket, particularly at a time when leadership changes, election disputes, and the appointment of ad hoc committees have become recurring features.

With the BCB now operating under an interim structure led by Tamim Iqbal, questions remain over long-term planning, transparency, and institutional stability. Many observers believe that without structural reforms, the ongoing cycle of disruption risks undermining both the development and international competitiveness of Bangladesh cricket.
