After promising to release only five albums under his own name, the Grammy-winning maverick redefines himself with a bold new identity.
For over a decade, Sturgill Simpson occupied a unique position in modern country music: a reluctant saviour of the genre, lauded for his fearless experimentation yet wary of being pigeonholed. Following the 2021 release of The Ballad of Dood and Juanita, Simpson made a vow that reverberated through the industry: five albums, and then he was done. Fans and critics alike braced for silence.
Yet, as 2026 dawned, Simpson revealed that the end of “Sturgill” was merely a metamorphosis. He has emerged as Johnny Blue Skies, a reinvention as dramatic as it is defiant. This new chapter is more than a change of name—it is a rebellion against the constraints of modern music marketing and genre expectation.
The evolution began subtly with 2024’s Passage du Désir, recorded at the hallowed Abbey Road Studios and Nashville’s Clement House. The album’s French title, meaning “Passage of Desire,” was inspired by a crumbling door Simpson noticed in Paris. Musically, it marked a pivot towards a lush, progressive country sound reminiscent of the 1970s—where the cosmic wanderings of Waylon Jennings meet the soulful precision of Joe Simon.
However, it is his latest venture, Mutiny After Midnight, that has truly electrified the scene. Released in collaboration with Atlantic Outpost, the album is a manifesto of “disco-hedonism” and artistic defiance. Simpson described it as a “protest against oppression and suppression,” shaped by marathon tour bus viewings of the 70s fusion ensemble Stuff and a deep dive into Marvin Gaye’s concept albums.
In a deliberate challenge to the streaming era, Mutiny After Midnight is a physical-only release—available on vinyl, CD, and cassette, but not on Spotify or Apple Music. Simpson insists this forces listeners into a more intentional, tactile experience of music—a “primary dance” of focus and engagement.
He enlisted his long-time ensemble, the Dark Clouds—Miles Miller on drums, Kevin Black on bass, Laur Joamets on guitar, and Robbie Crowell on keyboards. Together, they deliver heavy grooves, spontaneous lyricism, and tracks that eschew conventional restraint. Songs like “Make America Fuk Again” and “Excited Delirium” showcase a fearless, unfiltered voice no longer concerned with radio friendliness.

“Sturgill served his purpose, but he’s gone,” Simpson told GQ. As Johnny Blue Skies, he is lighter, weirder, and unbound. From island reveries in “Scooter Blues” to cosmic grief in “Jupiter’s Faerie,” he proves that true survival in the music world may require burning your own brand—and dancing joyfully in the ashes.
