Airports Nationwide on High Alert Following Recent Unrest

In light of the ongoing violence and acts of arson across the country, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has issued a directive to all airports to remain on high alert.

On Tuesday, 11 November, CAAB’s Assistant Director for Public Relations, Muhammad Kauser Mahmud, confirmed the decision to Dhaka Post. A formal letter has been sent to airports nationwide outlining the enhanced security measures.

The directive emphasises increased vigilance through continuous monitoring of CCTV cameras at all airports, heightened vehicle and foot patrols, and strengthened overall surveillance systems. Airport authorities have been instructed to prepare for immediate action to address any unexpected incidents.

Additionally, the letter stresses the need for airports to ensure maximum staffing levels and to reinforce fire safety and surveillance operations.

Key security guidelines outlined in the letter include:

Full implementation of the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) security policies.

Ensuring that only authorised personnel and passengers are allowed access to the airport, while strictly controlling public entry.

Ensuring the maximum presence of security personnel on duty at all times.

Random security checks at airport entrances and exits.

Ensuring thorough screening of passengers, cabin baggage, cargo, and vehicles.

Regular and frequent security patrols in sensitive areas within the airport and along the perimeter fence.

Daily testing of security equipment such as scanners, metal detectors, and CCTV cameras to ensure their effectiveness.

Providing regular briefings to security personnel before their shifts to maintain constant alertness.

Immediate reporting of any suspicious individuals, objects, or activities to senior authorities.

Maintaining 24-hour CCTV monitoring to track suspicious activity and respond promptly.

Inspection of gas lines, electrical systems, and other critical installations to ensure fire safety.

Ensuring that fire safety measures and readiness are in place around the clock.

These precautionary measures are being enforced to mitigate any potential risks, ensuring the safety and security of both passengers and staff at the nation’s airports.
