The political atmosphere in Habiganj reached a crescendo on Saturday night as Arif Talukdar, the District Convenor of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, made a public pledge to secure the immediate release of his colleague, Mahdi Hasan. Speaking to a throng of anxious supporters gathered at the gates of the Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station, Talukdar assured the crowd that legal proceedings were underway to ensure Hasan’s bail before the night was through.
The detention of Mahdi Hasan, the movement’s District Member Secretary, followed the viral spread of a controversial video recorded on Friday, 2 January. In the footage, Hasan was heard making incendiary remarks during a heated confrontation with the Officer-in-Charge at Shayestaganj Police Station, allegedly claiming responsibility for past acts of arson against police property. While the remarks sparked widespread condemnation, Talukdar urged supporters to remain composed and respect the judicial process. “No one is above the law,” he stated, “and we remain respectful of the legal system. I am accompanying Mahdi to court personally.”
| Event Phase | Details of Development |

Despite the Convenor’s optimistic outlook, the situation remains legally complex. Earlier on Saturday, the central office of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement issued a formal ‘show cause’ notice to Hasan, signed by Office Secretary Shahadat Hossain, demanding an explanation for his conduct. This internal disciplinary move suggests the organisation is attempting to distance itself from the inflammatory rhetoric while simultaneously fighting for the leader’s physical freedom.
The arrest itself was carried out by the Detective Branch (DB) on Saturday evening, who took Hasan from his private residence before handing him over to the Sadar Model Police Station. Since his arrival at the station, activists have maintained a constant vigil, demanding his release. Superintendent of Police Yasmin Khatun confirmed the detention but noted that the specific case details and statutory charges would be clarified in a subsequent briefing.
Arif Talukdar’s call for peace was coupled with a bold request for his followers to prepare a celebratory welcome. “We shall return with him tonight,” he declared. “Be ready with floral garlands to receive him.” However, with the authorities under pressure from and critics of the movement to uphold strict legal standards, the outcome of the midnight bail hearing remains the subject of intense speculation across the district.
