India’s loss to South Africa at home, their first in 25 years, raised serious questions about their batting against spin. In the Guwahati Test, India succumbed to a massive 408-run defeat, with batsmen overwhelmed by South African spinners.
Simon Harmer dominated with 17 wickets, while Keshav Maharaj claimed 6 wickets. Last year, India faced similar struggles against New Zealand spinners Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner.
Ravichandran Ashwin highlighted the root causes, explaining that neutral curators in domestic first-class cricket have reduced batsmen’s exposure to challenging spin. “The system was designed to improve overseas performance by preparing better pace-friendly wickets, but it has weakened our ability to handle spin at home,” Ashwin said.
He added, “Playing spin is not just about sweeps or reverse sweeps. Proper defence and planning are essential. South Africa’s strategy – consistent scoring and session management – exposed India’s vulnerabilities.”
| Match Format | Upcoming Series |
|---|---|
| ODI | 3 matches, starting next Sunday in Ranchi |
| T20I | 5 matches against South Africa |
Ashwin’s insights underline the urgent need for India’s batsmen to adjust to spin, especially on home soil, before facing further international challenges.
