A tragic incident unfolded on Monday afternoon at Harbang Police Outpost in Chokoria, Cox’s Bazar, when Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Rupan Kanti De, aged 52, suddenly collapsed while detaining a suspected drug user. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at Chokoria Upazila Health Complex.
According to eyewitnesses, ASI Rupan Kanti De and Sub-Inspector (SI) Mofazzal Hossain had intercepted Mohammad Junaid, 45, at around 5:30 pm on suspicion of drug use and distribution. ASI De restrained Junaid by holding onto his belt, while SI Mofazzal questioned him regarding alleged drug-related activities.
“Suddenly, ASI De collapsed to the ground,” said a witness. He was first rushed to the Mother and Child Hospital at Boraitali, after which he was transferred to Chokoria Upazila Health Complex at approximately 7:00 pm. Doctors at the facility confirmed his death on arrival. During the commotion, Junaid managed to flee the scene.
Locals described Junaid as a known drug user who, despite lacking formal political rank, had been active in the local chapter of the Awami League. While he admitted to drug consumption, he denied involvement in sales when questioned by police.
Dr Zainul Abedin, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, explained, “ASI De had suffered two prior heart attacks. His condition at the hospital, including frothing at the mouth and vomiting, strongly indicates death due to cardiac arrest. There were no external injuries.” He added that SI Mofazzal also fell ill upon witnessing his colleague collapse and was admitted to the same facility for observation.
Chokoria Police Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Monir Hossain confirmed to the press, “ASI Rupan Kanti De died of a heart attack. Junaid was briefly detained and searched, but no drugs were recovered, and he was released shortly thereafter.”
